no D400
at least not this name :D

I don't think there has been any indication of either of these...only speculations by other members on here. I will still hope at least!

OMG I'm getting the hots for a D400 (providing it is no bigger than 24mp). I could easily make do with the D7000 but as I intend to stick with the next body for a long time and concentrate on glass, it may as well be the best DX I can get.

It did, but your question was one of the long winded off topic discussions which occurred. Sometimes going off topic isn't so bad, interesting things come up and are pursued. It comes down to the "pro" body being larger, faster, quicker, and more accurate in some ways which can be important to those who take a lot of photos at one time. And then there is the additional side issue of whether or not Nikon would be able to take the D400 to FX for the price point it occupies. Odds are the D7100 will be the top of the amateur line and the D400 will be the bottom of the pro line because it still will use the less expensive to produce DX sensor. But an interesting alternative to the DX400 is likely to be a used D700 selling for the same price.

My wife actually didn't seem totally against a new body idea if I can save the money...now to just hope they release it sometime :)

Actually does anyone that is anticipating this worry that it will be replaced with a D7200 instead of a D400? I honestly can't even say why I don't want a D7000. I haven't ever shot a D300s to know the difference.

What features were found in the D300S that weren't in the D90 or compared to the D7000 what would we expect in the D400?

Why would we not see a D400 next year? While i would agree that the current model does not lack much, nikon has to at least be perceived to "keep up"

I'm more and more convinced that we are not going to see a d400 next year, more likely a new d300 version - with just a sensor upgrade, but I might be wrong of course.

These were the last rumored specs for the D400. I seriously doubt they are legit but it's still fun to think of the possibilities. I think it's more likely we will see a D400 in summer 2011.

D400
Replaces D300S.
Announcement in 1st half of 2011.
16MP or higher* CMOS sensor (same new sensor as upcoming Sony A700 replacement).
AF motor still there.
8 FPS (without the grip).
Live View & special* high quality 1080 video (possibly RAW video???!!!).
Articulated* 920K LCD.
OVF & AF module same as D300S."

Imagine what Nikon is going to have to put on the D400 to tempt people away from what is on offer right now. You've got the D700 selling for around $2400 and the D300s and D90 for $1500 and $800, respectively. They are going to have to put a lot of development time into the replacements if they're going to sell well. Not to say they haven't already worked on them for a while, but I think this round of replacements might surprise everyone for being later than expected. I might end up eating my words and Nikon replaces every camera in their lineup at the end of this year.

probably not this year, as Nikon considers the D300s a pretty significant release.

As far as current rumors suggest this year is for the D90 and D700 replacements, and probably a D3000 upgrade. D400 and D4 will most probably be 2011. Though for the D4 the only info i'm basing this on is Thom hogans prediction, which are basically educated guesses, but better than nothing at this point.
