I hope it isn't too long before we see the OS/X Gimp 2.8 - they're still at 2.6.12 (GIMP on OS X).

I also need UFRaw/DCRaw to support the D800, but that can wait until my camera actually arrives. If anyone has a D800 or D800E and a calibrated colour chart, I'm sure the developers would appreciate a RAW image as described halfway down this page.

If Gimp doesnt support it then there a Gimp plugin called UFRAW that says its supported.

http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Cameras.html

I use Digikam anyway for viewing my raw files. There is also rawtherepee. the last time i tried it it was very good. Have not had the time to install it yet. But it will be on soon :-)

Heartyfisher,
Does 2.8 support NRW files? I'll have to check which ver. of GIMP I have but it won't support NRW from my P7000.

There is a GIMP plugin called UFRaw which handles all Nikon RAW formats, although it might have to be updated for the D4 and D800.

I've never used it as I do all my RAW conversions at the command line using dcraw.

I'm fairly new to handling RAW images, so can't really say if GIMP will do everything you need.

Well I do plan on downloading LR4, can GIMP process Nikon RAW files or would I need to convert them to Jpeg in Nikon View first. On that note, I know I will get fried for this but, how much different is LR from Nikon View (besides all the niffty plugins you can get to increase the speed of your work flow). From my understanding both can view, rate, organize your files. I am sure LR is way better but I am seriously looking at using Capture NX2 for anything I really want to "adjust" to my liking.

I was wanting NX3 but after reading the D800 brochure it does not look like NX 3 is going to be out soon. Forgot where, but I saw that there will be an update for pictures that needed the D800 but someone used a D800E and the software will help take out the bad patterns (forgot what you call it at the moment).

I know LR is way faster but I don't mind my computer crunching numbers for hours (well I do but its never critical). If I need my pictures fast usually they come straight out of the camera to a printer to a parent, usually within 30 min. There is no time to process anything with parents wanting pictures right then, plus you still have to get back to shooting the rest of the event.

Gimp has been in dev.. V2.6.12 is the current stable version. and the dev version is 2.7.4. the next stable version 2.8 is expected early this year.. expected in early march but maybe in April. It uses a new graphic engine and renderer which is smarter and faster. Single window mode will be available. Lots of new things under the hood. also new UI so it will be good! if you cant wait for 2.8 2.7.4 is the last and latest dev version and should be quite stable. It has most of the features of 2.8.

Scooby, two things. First, you should download the LR4 beta and then buy the production version when it comes out. I am almost certain you'll never ever kick yourself over that decision. Second, Gimp isn't really comparable to LR; you want both of these programs. Gimp is a pixel editor and LR is more like a photo management and digital darkroom program. That's not to say LR isn't capable. I spend over 90% of my editing time in LR.

I use Gimp (2.6.11) on OS/X Lion as my default image editor.

Maybe it's because I used it all the time in Linux, but I can easily do anything I need to do with Gimp.

- The zoom % indicator is present: actually it's a pull-down menu now.
- I've never used the refocus tool and don't see how it can work.

While I sit on the shelf and think about buying software. Since I have not seen anything lately about GIMP figured I might ask and see if anything has changed (honestly all I should do is just buy LR and be done with it but for now I will just prepare to kick myself later).

My Gimp says he is 2.6.8. I also installed the "gimp-plugin-registry" that provides a ton of other useful stuff, and that gets updates independently from the core Gimp.

Thanks! I have 2.6.8 also, but just upgraded my OS, and forgot to add the plugin-registry. I was missing the refocus tool. I think the zoom % indication is presently missing, that is not good.

The Gimp is best on linux... I have tried it in windows and it lags behind in usability... and windows is slow .... I am so glad I have finally got rid of windows for my personal use.. Although I will need to install windows in a virtual box soon to check out and brush up on their latest win7 offering... Gimp is just a little less user friendly than the windows stuff.. But I like it..

The problem is the thing I really want to post on is now against the rules.. so .. we are just posting on D90s.. LOL !

But will probably wait till the 39ner arrives. In the mean time I am out with my camera and playing with the new updated GIMP(updated mine yesterday!)
