I got this on my old Coolpix 4500, twice on my D200 and twice on my D700... My Nikon dealer in Switzerland told me Nikon does it for free, even out of warranty... I sent my D200 twice and the D700 once, and the latter will wait for a calmer period to go again... I would use superglue (as I did on my coolpix, never did that again... and still working with it), but Nikon does a complete service to the camera when you send it (mirror, sensor and chamber cleaning, firmware update), so I prefer sending the machine for some days (D700) or weeks (D200)... But maybe that's only valid in Switzerland... I would ask before sending...

Scratches I agree with Niko, but the glue has either given up, is wrongly spec'ed or is poorly applied IMHO so I would go potty if they tried telling me it is fair wear and tear. I would hope they would be more worried about protecting their reputation at that point than making a few bucks.

I once took an f1.4 50mm back to British Honduras Street in London where Olympus had their service centre because it had bubbles in the glue of the front lens group. Although I bought it second hand, they repaired it there and then while I watched and for free. That kind of service gets my vote every time.

Just my 2c as an end user.

I think the problem is that Nikon (and other manufacturers) say that it is wear and tear from use and that's not covered in the warranty. Just like if you scratched up your LCD screen, Nikon would charge you to replace it even if you still had warranty.

My approach would be that wether it was in warranty or not, at that age it shouldn't happen. Nikon must fix it and for free. If we all take this approach, their warranty costs will reflect back to production and design to keep the build quality where it should be.

If it's only year old, and if it's still under warranty than send it to Nikon, they will fix it for You. If Your warranty is over than they will charge You for this - shouldn't be more than $30-$40, or You can fix it Yourself (my preferred way)

Wow, I would have thought it would be more durable than that. It hasn't been coming off on the D40 yet, but I've seen the same happen to a D200.

This was happening on my D300, too. Never got around to supergluing it, but that would be my solution.

I think it's pretty common on some cameras. Not just Nikon. I remember the D80, D200 and several canons doing the same thing. I don't think a few drops of super glue would harm anything.

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has had some experience with their grip (as in textured rubber, not as in like MB-10) beginning to peel off? My D90 is a year old and it has begun to come off near where one would place their right thumb (near the rear wheel). Are there easy fixes? I mean, the super glue on my desk is staring me in the face, but I don't know if there are better solutions for this.

Thanks!
