If you need the extra control (believe me there is a large difference between the D60/D5000 and D90/D300(s)) get a used D80 off Ebay for $300ish and use the rest toward glass.

Keep the D60 and invest in lenses. In a years time you can get a waay better camera than either the current D90 or D300S.

I feel your pain, as i have a D60 as well. But i would also suggest getting a lens first, it will have a larger impact on your photography.

But funnily enough, getting a pro lens will make you get a better camera, I broke my 18-55 and replaced it with a Sigma 17-70(great lens btw). And it makes my D60 look ridiculous, its not as bad as putting it on a 70-200, but still...

The moment i put it on a felt the desire to get a D90/D300.

But back to being serious, for the tele stuff pretty much everything with great AF is AF-S. Older tele's will not AF that well on a D90 in any case, as the AF motor is not as strong as on Pro bodies.

As for the portrait, we are really in a bind. There are no cheap portrait lenses with AF-S right now. either get a 85mm 1.8 and focus manually, or get the 50mm 1.4 which is $400. Or get the 50 1.8, it will not focus but its $100.

I would say get the lenses first than change the body. As for choosing either to get d90 or d300 it's a tough question. If you doesn't bother with used equipment than get a used d300. If You prefere new get d90.

It probably all depends on how expensive the telephoto lenses your looking at are. Most of the better to pro tele lenses have a built in focus motor so they are more silent and discrete.

As far as brands go, get Nikkor if you can, Sigma is the next choice. Tamron does have a few gems tho.

Hi everyone!

I've seen this question asked before and read through the responses. I understand the technical differences between each of the cameras. My question is more related to the different lenses available for the camera.

I currently on the D60 and have no issues using it. My only problem is finding lenses that have the autofocus functionality built-in. Yes they are out there but they seem to be more expensive then regular lenses with similar specs that would work with the D90 or D300s.

I'm going to be taking more wildlife and portrait shots within the upcoming year so either way I will need to purchase at least 2 new lenses. My question for the forum is this:

Upgrade to the D90 or D300s now in hopes of saving money on the lenses or keep my D60 and put out for the more expensive lenses? I would be looking at a decent telephoto lens and a portrait lens. Thoughts on Sigma/Tamron versus Nikon?

Thanks!
