I swear I didn't spill any beer on it Adam! I "should" be good with the warranty though (note should is in quotes for emphasis). But thanks for the offer Adam. It won't boot up at all. Just the Apple screen and nothing happens. I've gone through all the tech support help and apparently they think it's the hard drive. Apple seems to be aware of these kinds of failures. They didn't give me a hard time with trouble shooting it. Now the question is can my data be recovered. :^(

Very well said, Bob. A few points to add -

"there's lots of stuff that a PC can do that won't run on a Mac unless it's running Windows". You do have to ask yourself (for HOME use) does it matter? The key softwares (MS Office, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.) are all cross-platform. (Though if you're a gamer, do NOT buy a mac.) And there's always BootCamp/Parallels/VMWare (or borrow a PC!) for occasional use.

"Most of the vaunted superiority of Macs is perception". Perhaps. A few years ago one of the mainstream PC magazines tested top-of-the-range laptops from half a dozen big-name companies. Conclusion? The Mac using Boot Camp was the fastest. All the parts are tuned to work well together.

"most people have better luck with Macs because they aren’t very computer smart". Or they just don't want to be be bothered. I'll match my computer-smartness against anybody on this thread. But just like my TV, car, washing machine, camera, etc. I simply want it to work perfectly when I switch it on - I don't need to be TV-smart, Washing-machine-smart.

"If Microsoft ever ... gets someone with some vision". Pleeease don't get me started. Microsoft have done unimaginable damage to IT development by their ruthless, crush-the-opposition tactics. I cannot think of anything MS has done that can be genuinely described as innovative.

I wasn't trying to start a debate or flame war about the two platforms. Just an observation that each had it's pluses and minuses, and then mostly about the software. On the hardware side I'd love one of the Mac tower PCs, and their displays are absolutely fantasic. I don't care for the laptops, largely because I can't stand Mac keyboards, but that's a personal preference, I don't have any doubts that the hardware is premium components. I would just prefer to put my money toward lenses not PC hardware :).

Oh, and I've worked in IT since DOS 2.0, Microsoft has made huge innovations in the IT space, I don't even want to think about what it would be like without them. And yes some of it was taking other people's work and expanding on it, but everyone does that, it's part of innovation. Even Apple does it.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Apple when Jobs is done at Apple, he’s going to be a hard act to follow.

You mean when he's "dead" at Apple *cue the crying fanboys :^P *

The same thing will probably happen the last time Apple fired Steve. They'll lose focus and start a slow and steady fall only this time Microsoft won't save them again :^)

Seriously I hate Mac versus PC "fights" because I use both and to me they can both suck. I think Apple is full of themselves and they've become the image of "Big Brother" that they once used in their 1984 Superbowl commercial. Apple has been a sell-out for many years now. Yes Apple products are beautifully designed and are more user friendly but just because it's a Mac don't mean it's better.

Windows on the other hand has always been about business and software. Until recently the nerds who run Microsoft couldn't give a rat's butt to aesthetic, but the world runs on PCs whether you Mac boys like it or not. And remember the first thing Steve Jobs did when he was asked to come back and "save" Apple was to introduce Apple's "savior" Bill Gates on the "Jumbo Tron" behind him.

And to all you hackers, I mean Linux users out there, shut up because that sucks too :^P

In my experience, laptop batteries last about two years; after that just bite the bullet and buy a new one. Macs and PCs are the same - chances are it's the same battery in a different casing.

I've recently retired having worked almost all my life in the IT industry. As far as I am concerned Macs are far, far better than PCs FOR HOME USE and especially for photo enthusiasts. I cannot understand why anyone would chose a PC for home use. (OK, there's about a 6-10% price premium for buying Mac, yet we all buy Nikons when there's plenty of cheaper cameras out there). But each to his own.

Jonny, I suspect someone is @@@@-ing about with your membership status. I look forward to seeing what you are next week ;)

There is very little a Mac can do that a Windows computer can't, and that's usually because Apple doesn't write for Windows. But there's lots of stuff that a PC can do that won't run on a Mac unless it's running Windows. Most of the vaunted superiority of Macs is perception, very little of it has anything to do with fact. They both have their good and bad parts.
Why most people have better luck with Macs is because they aren’t very computer smart. Not that their stupid, simply they don’t know much about computers. Macs have always been a fairly closed environment that works better for people who don’t know much because all the things you can use have already been tested by Apple. The PC has a lot more flexibility, but that can get you into trouble if you don’t know what you are doing since it’s impossible to test all the permutations.
If Microsoft ever gets rid of Ballmer and Gates and gets someone with some vision and energy running the place, they could do some great things. Shame Brian Valentine left; he would have been a great person to run Microsoft. It will be interesting to see what happens to Apple when Jobs is done at Apple, he’s going to be a hard act to follow.

Pete I'm just trying to keep discussions going together. I don't understand why you started a new thread for the same discussion that was already going on here. Like I said before this is a photography forum and we just don't want to start filling it up with computer related topics. Yes, yes your thread was photography related, kinda, but lately we've been seeing numerous threads starting on the exact same topic.

Don't be offended. I'm just trying to keep things easily organized.

Forum rule #1 reads in part
Non-photography threads are permitted at admin's and moderators discretion. Admin and moderators have the right to close topics they deem unnecessary or that contribute to a hostile atmosphere

So the rule is already there for all to "see". Anyway email me if you want to discuss this further. Let's not hijack this already hijacked thread :^)

And the Mighty terminator terminated another thread, that I actually think was

never mind ;>(

Maybe I should start another thread, maybe something like "Should NR have Posting Rules for Moderators displayed for us to see" what do you think Niko our dear little Terminator

Niko, have you tried the opera mini browser app? It gives (very) limited flash browsing at least on my ipod—meaning that sometimes links on some flash sites show up. Definitely not adequate. I heard cloud browser will let you see flash sites, but it gave me some error message about not having registered my device and I deleted it.

I agree about apple making the market try to keep up, poster. I'll wait for a tablet that runs google chrome OS and fixes the issues with the iPad...but won't run my apps :(

Exactly. It's a recreational device. I use my thinkpad for multimedia use, mainly watching hulu, browsing the net, forums etc. Ipad would takeover these tasks from my laptop. And the laptop would only be use for actual work, be it word processing, or editing of photos.

Moreover, I was about to spend +/- $300 for a book reader. I might as well spend some more , and have something more useful than a regular digital book reader. I read a lot of pdf documents. Hopefully ipad has/or will have an app for reading these file formats. It would be swell if I could use a stylus pen to annotate the docs as I read, but I guess the "keyboard" isn't all that bad.

I wanted to have a webcam, so I could buy an ipad for my father. He would love that thing. All that he does is either video chat( where webcam is essential obviously), and read news/email from the web. It would be a very fun and useful toy for him.

Ohh and thanks for reminding me that it doesn't have a freaking flash support. Will it ever have one?

So until ipad doesn't have the flash support or webcam Steve won't see my money anytime soon.

One reason why I like Apple, is that it leads the whole market with it's product design. Now we will have a ton of "ipad killers" coming out from Microsoft/Google etc. Gives us customers more choice and better products.
