have You tried to take out the battery - I have similar problems with my d200 (instead of disappearing I simply can't move it either way) and taking out batter fixes this problem

I had similar problem with my nikon D90, when the wide focus point appeared in view finder and it didnt turn off. Anyway, i pulled out batery for 24 hours and it works ok for now.

Now i noticed that in wide focus area on top middle focus point, that there is no visible any wide circle, witch means that i saw in viewfinder a wide focus point that is not available to us users and it is hidden. It was just some error or something that fixed itself by removing battery for 24 hours. Maybe 1 hour would be enough .

Try that and report what will happen.

Just curious if anyone has experienced the focus point disappearing during a long day of shooting. I shoot weddings and the last few weddings at around 1,000 images my focus point will not show up so I have no idea what I'm focusing on. I then turn it on closest subject to get focus but it doesn't let me choose where to focus. It is now wedding season and I can't afford to send this camera off to Nikon for 2 weeks.
