Yeah I keep thinking that Nikon is bigger that it actually is. Make sense now I guess if they have to convert their production lines/machinery for the newer version.

Hey man! I prefer to be called economically prudent, lol

Yeah remaining stocks are still sold but I don't think Nikon is still making them. They don't have the resource to build multiple versions of the same lens along the same assembly line. They have to "re-tool" for newer versions. Nikon is a "small" company.

Besides they'll still sell the 85mm f1.8 for all you "cheapskates" :^)

Why not? Not everybody will want to have the VR or the Af-S. Having both versions on the market will allow and justify Nikon to charge more for the new one while still having the old one sold for the current price.

Doesn't Nikon still produce and sell the 80-200mm 2.8 AF-D ED? Obviously the 70-200 AfS both VR 1 and VR2 are being sold today. No reason for the 80-200 to be still produced.

That is unless the 80-200 isn't being produced anymore. Somebody google that.

I didn't say it would be the same price. I said it could be close. Why would Nikon continue to sell both the current old version and the future new version together?

lol

I doubt that Nikon will put it at the same price as the current one. Why, would they do it? They will still be selling the old one, so they can give a mark up on the new one, and it's going to be justified by the AF-S and VR.

I used to think that 1.4 or 1.2 lenses were awesome and that's all that I ever wanted. But I found myself always shooting my 50mm 1.4 at 2.8, so now I just opt out for th e 1.8 primes.

My next on the list lens is 24mm 2.8 and 85mm 1.8

Actually I think it'll go for close to the current model. It's a very popular focal length and Nikon will make more of a "killing" then with the 24mm.

One thing's for sure though, if the new 85mm is significantly more expensive then the used market price for the current 85mm will sky rocket too!

So apparently this lens is coming out pretty soon. Any guess on how much it will be sold for, lol? AF-S plus VR at least $500 more than the original imho.
