Jaytron said:
Eh, from what I've read on other forums, the 18-200 isn't too great. I know a few personal friends that didn't keep theirs for more than a few weeks.

Thom Hogan's site has a pretty good comparison for the consumer zooms.

I have the lens and it isn't that it is bad. It has a very usable zoom range and it is built better then most of the other kit lenses, but the pictures don't seem to be as sharp as I hoped. It is a competent lens though and I wouldn't rule it out. I love having one lens that covers most of the range you want to shoot except for super telephoto. I would get annoyed with just having the 18-55 or even 18-105 personally. It is also the most expensive "kit" range lens I think. If you add a couple steps to the f-stop it seems to work pretty well.

This one from today with the 18-200 at f9.0 and 170 mm

This again!!! ^^^ what Jaytron said... I'd recommend the 18-70 personally. I also find the 18-55=18-200 in image quality...

I'd put the 18-70 behind the 16-85 and then the 18-200 Jaytron. They've got metal lens mount versus plastic for the other two.

Get the 18-105. I have the 18-55 and it really is too short unless you only plan on people or landscape photos. Its worth the extra money to have the extra 50mm IMO.

I agree with jonny, 18-105 is at least 100€ better.
As for memory cards on D5000 faster cards only makes sense for video.
Do not count on D90 replacement any time soon, and Nikon does not lover the prices immediately after replacement is announced.

Welcome, latko and Jessica. I've also used both the 18-55 and the 18-105 quite a bit (but don't own either) and I much prefer the 18-105. I think it's the best kit lens I've tried and worth the extra €100.

I don't have either lenses but i have played with them. i prefer the 18-105 just feels better built and the range is sweet. I have the 18-200 and its a great lens for walk about and for my preferred FOV. i also have the 18-70 and its a lovely lens but it does not have VR. The 16-85 is great as well. But for your budget I would say get the 18-105. and the D5000.

I have a D90 and the 18-55 lens. I use this lens ALOT. I photograph mostly people, especially kids. It is the cheapest lens I own, and one of my favorites. It is super sharp and focuses closely. The zoom range is great for me, especially considering that when used on a DX camera it gives the same angle-of-view as a 28-85mm lens gives on a 35mm film or FX digital camera. I prefer it to my much more expensive 18-200. In fact, the only time I don't use the 18-55 is if I switch to a fast prime lens for low light (check out the DX 35mm f1.8). I don't have personal experience with the 18-105, but generally the 18-55 seems to have better reviews if you look on Adorama or Ken Rockwell's website. I do generally think you should spend your money on better lenses rather than on a more expensive camera body. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Latko.

The D90 will be replaced soon but I don't think the price of a new D90 will come down more than it already has. It's more likely that when the replacement model (D7000?) is announced or released the D90 will become harder to find as it starts to disappear from stores.

The D5000 is a good camera and I think the zoom range of the 18-105 is better than the 18-55. The 18-55 zoom range is often too short. Especially if you are use to a point and shoot camera's big zoom.

I would go for the faster memory card too.

Hi to everyone.
I am new in DSLR world and I need help:) I want to buy dslr and I was thinking about D5000 with 18-105mm lens,it costs about ~760 euro (with regular 18-55mm lens is ~660 euros).
The question is does it worth extra 100 euro for this lens?
My other option was D90 but it is too expensive for me (~980 euro) and I was considering option to buy it with 18-55/3,5-5,6 VR lens (~890 euro), that is also above my budget but I can stretch to that price I think.
What can you suggest to me, should I wait for some time because I “hear” some rumors that successor to D90 will be released soon so the price of D90 will drop?
Also one question regarding memory cards speed: Is 8 GB, 9MB/s write and 15MB/s read speeds enough, or should I go with 20MB/s read and write speed(first one is 30 and second one is 50 euro)
Big thanks in advance.
