Those air releases were cool - less chance of camera shake because they are less stiff when they press the button.

Do you mean the screw-in kind? I actually say good riddance. This is lots better IMO because of the options it gives you.

Do you remember the kind with a long tube and a rubber blower thing to trigger you camera

You mean the D100, which was the last camera that had a screw in spot for a cable release. The D50 has an IR sensor.

Nice. I never had any problems with the ML-L3, but I had to give that up when I moved to the D300, that's okay though, my Dad got a free remote for his D50. ;-)

If I did a lot of group photos, that I wanted to be in I could see this kind of product being very useful.

Sorry for the title copying, Pete. Isn't imitation is the highest form of flattery?

I wanted to say a little about wireless triggers in case anyone missed this when oneANT mentioned it in another thread (the D90 accessories thread). Like he suggested, I bought a Phottix Plato ($41 shipped on ebay) with an N10 cable that plugs into the GPS input of the D90. I ordered it on the 19th and it got here today (the 29th) from Hong Kong (the ebay seller was photo-rev).

I thought I'd review it in case anyone is interested. One of the biggest complaints I had about the D90 is how unreliable/inflexible the ML-L3 infrared remote is. Not only do you have to have the release mode set to remote/remote with delay, you also have to have the remote in front of the camera(!?). I used to wonder how much it would have cost to put another IR sensor in the back. Last weekend I had a big family portrait to shoot (~40 people) and I had my camera set up at about 8 ft off the ground, and I tried the IR remote for a few minutes before tossing it aside because I couldn't ever tell if it was going to work or not. It got people smiling to watch me stretching up to reach the shutter release, so it wasn't all bad, right? ;-)

When ANT mentioned this option it took me all of 10 minutes to get one ordered. It's also got a cable available for the 10-pin connector of the D200/D300/D700/etc., so you can use the same release for either body just by switching out the cable. This is good news if you want a D90 as backup and a more pro body besides.

I only checked the range of the transmitter to about 75m (~200ft), but it still worked great at that range, and there's a light on the transmitter that tells you if the receiver is receiving the signal (awesome feature). You can cycle through four modes:
-single shot (holding the button halfway is like holding it halfway on the camera)
-2S—when you press the shutter, there's a 2 second delay during which the camera's shutter release is held down halfway (useful for making sure there's time to focus) and then fires the shutter.
-continuous release—a useless mode. Better just put your camera in continuous release and use...
-bulb—pressing the button once is just like holding the shutter down continuously. It stays activated until the button is pressed again.

The transmitter also has a plug for the 2.5mm jack, so it can be plugged in directly as a wired remote release. The receiver has a cold shoe attachment on the bottom that fits into the camera hot shoe.

I know what I'm getting my dad for fathers' day this year. Thanks for the tip, oneANT!

Cameras it's compatible with:
with N6 cable: D70s/D80
with N8 cable: N90s/F5/F6/F100/F90/F90X/D1 series/D2 series/D3 series/DX00 cameras
with N10 cable: D90/D5000
