Back to the thread, I still can not recall meeting any female Street Photogs, and actual there are a few female photogs on this forum that would make great Street Photogs

Sometimes we need a bit of help from dear old Niko to do some damage control, I think he has even removed some of my smartass remarks, but I don't take that personal, and neither should any of you Forum Members, have fun with this and don't be afraid to express what you think

I'm NOT saying all street photographers are perverts! I'm just trying to explain people's fears and suspicions when they see someone with a camera taking pictures. Especially when kids are involved.

I didn't just make the "pedophile photographer" story up.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,262700,00.html

Hey it's Jessi! 32?! Judging from your self portrait I would have guess 22! :^)

Jessi said:
You guys aren't going to like this, but I am uncomfortable with strangers taking pictures of my kids. I think most women are.

I'm totally on your side of that comment Jessi. That's what I mean when I say I respect people's "privacy" when they are walking around in public. Even though I have a "right" to run up and snap a photo, I wouldn't do it. If your kids are too cute to pass up (we know they are) I'd strike up a conversation first and ask you for permission. If you said no then I'd respect that.

It's not like parents fears aren't justified. A few years ago their was a man who had a website dedicated to helping "pedophiles" find the best places to find and photograph "good looking" kids. He freely admitted to being a pedophile but said he had never attacked a child and did not have a criminal record. When local parents found pictures of their kids on his website they called police. The police couldn't do anything because the guy hadn't broken any laws. All the pictures he took of children were done in public and legally.

Yes that's an extreme case but still very scary stuff! Like I've said before, there are good street photogs and there are bad ones. Always be a good one!

Thanks for your responds Jessi, first female to respond in any of the threads about Street Photography
I was just kidding about wearing a dress, although it would make for funny picture I'm sure of me trying to be be a street photog with dress and all
There are many styles of Street Photographing, I newer took pictures of someones kids unless I had permission, I have taken some at BMX events but I am not hiding and have permission to shoot at the event
When I was younger I used a longer lens and patients, I have newer been caught doing it, stopped or asked to stop. Yes it takes a bit of nerve, maybe more today with our paranoia about photographing in public.

(32 year old woman / mother / wife)
Interesting thread. I love street photography. As I learn about my camera and think about types of photography I would like to explore, street is absolutely at the top. I have no interest in any other kind of professional photography, but street does appeal to me. However, I absolutely do not have the nerve to pull it off. Although, I also only have a 50mm lens so I would have to be standing on top of my subjects to snap them. :) Maybe I would be braver if I could stand a little farther away.

You guys aren't going to like this, but I am uncomfortable with strangers taking pictures of my kids. I think most women are. In fact, on Halloween a strange woman came up and took a picture of my little SuperGirl. The woman didn't look at me or say anything to me or my 2 year old daughter. She dashed up, snapped the pic, and walked on. To be honest, the fact that she was a woman didn't make it any more comfortable for me. In fact, I kind of felt like as a woman, she should have known better. Before you guys jump all over me - I know it was her right to take the picture and I know she was probably safe. BUT, that does not mean that I have to be comfortable with the idea. But I guess she probably also wasn't a pro, so I have gotten off topic here.

I am not even sure how to get back on topic so I will close with this:

I'm referring to "real" street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand. They were all men. Any web links to female street photographers? A "nicer looking" women taking pictures in a park doesn't really count unless she's doing it "professionally" as a street photographer.

This forum needs more women. We could use their input on this topic.

I see plenty, I dont look for them and see them as any other photographer, just nicer to look at is all. I would say that I've almost seen them in equal numbers here which I think is pretty cool. The last I saw was only yesterday taking pics of skaters in a park.

One is keeping an eye out for me in the city, Im one of her biggest fans, another is in Indonesia but more travel photography than street although it could just as easily be both I guess. Have seen some terrific pics too. I would hope that are not divided by gender, I dont care what kind of camera or lens or any other rubbish, a good pic is simply that.

This lass was doing posed street portraits ...

And Diane Arbus, she didnt exploit people, that was the reaction many people had because they didnt want to look at disabled people and had no experience of disabled people. People that have this experience dont talk like that. Instead those viewers want bikini girls and pics of empty headed models swooning over car bonnets.
She had a lot of love for the subjects, it is clearly evident in her pictures, her depression was likely due to her dislike for many of the viewers. I wish I had the chance to meet her. Her work was not street by the way.

bmxdad said:
I still think that a female Street Photographer would have an advantage, and maybe not looked at in the same way. A bit like a young male vs an older male

Pete

So none of you have talked to female Street Photogs

They dont have advantage and young/old doesnt either. There are some exceptional young, some exceptional old and some exceptional female ...thats all.
