I have saved up enough cash to get a 24-70mm. I really want to wait for the VR version but who knows when it will come out. I debating whether or not to skip it and get a Zeiss 100mm Makro. I have been told its still not worth it even with the new ZF.2 lenses because the AF on the D90 is not very accurate. I should probably skip it altogether and upgrade my body to the D700 refresh.

Can't argue with you on this one, I returned them to the store and with special equipment they got them unstucked, them stucked again for about 5 cycles before deciding there was a problem. The replacements work just fine.

Yes Jonny, there is not much to grip on and the ring that rotates is not in the way. I noticed that the clear filter edge is texture to ease gripping it and the polarized the screw inside it has similar texture so perhaps both just locked-in their respective texture.

I found risky to remove the clear filter to put the polirized.

I tried the freezer trick and even heated the clear filter hoping that it would expand enough to allow the smaller polirized to loosen but that did not work.

When I have put the polirized, it was easy, it just screw in and that was it. That was their last move.

I will bring it back at the store, I guess it is a defect. I will see what they say before attempting bolder moves.

Thanks for your good words.

About your filters .. coupling like rabbits.. try this.. put them in the freezer for a min. !! (That should cool them down :-) ) then take them out and place the polarizer face down on a towel. grip it through the towel so that you dont warm it up. now put your palm on the other lens and turn (dont worry about dirtying it, you need to clean it up after anyway) Hopefully you will warm it up enough to expand it and loosen it and make it easy to remove. Good luck! Oh I usually use the polarizer directly on the lens .. Ie I remove the other filter first.

And good buy with the D700 ! It will be taking great images for many years!

Is the issue that there's nowhere to grip the polarizer, Pierre? It has probably got most of the filter that can be rotated independently of the part that screws in, doesn't it?

Congrats on the D700. I would personally put a filter on the 24-70. I know there are mixed feelings here on the forum.

For me the wait is over, I will no longer bother you guys with question about if I should shoot with a D700 but now the questions will be how.

I got my D700, 24-70 2.8, 1 extra battery, 1 clear filter to protect the lense and one polirized filter.

It is a heavy solution but not as much as I was effraid, I logged it the whole day just to see and did not find it overkilled compared with my old Canon AE-1 with its 50mm f1.4 canon lense and the vivitar 70-210 f3.5 that I had carried for 10 years.

I did not even shoot 3 picture yet and I got in trouble with the the 2 filters, I first screw the clear filter, noticed I could no longer put the cap, then a screw the polirizer on top of it and they both got stuck together, I cannot take the two filters apart. Anyone has a tric? (I know, it should be a different thread)

You guys put clear filters to protect your lenses?

Think of it this way. You wait and suffer a few more months. Or you buy now and then suffer possible regret for years with a camera that was "obsolete" after a few weeks/months of your purchase.

Your call. A camera is just a camera regardless of specs and I strongly believe any Nikon camera is very capable of producing awesome images. But just by you waiting and asking means you value your hard earned money (or don't really have that much money to make a "mistake")and want the best for many years. I doubt you need a D700 NOW, TODAY, do you? You just WANT it NOW, TODAY.

But it's your money and it's your call...

Of course they are are going to tell you nothing is coming because they have to sell you what they have NOW! The same reason Nikon HQ doesn't make an announcement telling everyone what their release plans are for the year!

I would really like to play with DSLR/big lenses video but november is way too far, the whole summer with no camera? Then comes the big winter, dark at 16:00 and it would be a minimum of 1 year before I can start shooting? Nah... I had considered the 5DmII but I do not like the body (looks cheap and ackward) and i knows nothing of the canon lenses. The only other camera that I could consider (since I want FF) is the D3S but I already worry about the D700 weight so I hardly can see myself lugging that brick (what is the weight difference?). So no video, that would then allow me to concentrate on still (I can always try time-lapses).

There is no serious predictions for a D700 replacement before the end of the summer. I already have suffered the January, Fev, March count-downs, and now the April one is almost over with nothing in sight. Next one in june, then sept? So I have exausted all of my internal arguments. D700 will have to do for a few years minimum.

For offical nikon gear the best prices are probably at Lauzeau, though check out mostlydigital or royal photo, sometimes they are cheaper. Though never by much.

I don't know about FX gear, but a lot of the lower end Nikon stuff is as cheap or cheaper in Canada (70-300, 18-105). But the best deal is to take a road trip to a adorama or BH. or ship gear from amazon to a friend and bring it back.

I am so sick of waiting, called the big guy in Montreal and he told me that the canadian Nikon representative said not to expect anything new in the DSLR for any time soon, so I might just make a man of myself and go for the D700 tomorrow. I am planning to get the 24-70 2.8, a clear filter to protect the lense, an extra battery, 32 gig flash, perhaps a polarized filter. I may also go for a good bag.

I am not sure I need the SB600 flash for now. Something else I should consider?

Perhaps I should go to Plattsburgh NY for the bag, memory flash, extra battery and the filters? What ya think? Is there a place there I can hope to find that stuff.

Every odd days I keep changing my mind and I am effraid I am starting to loose it.

Is it worthed trying to turn the 24-70 into macro with spacers? What about a doubler?

Hi Folks:

I just came back from a visit to my local Henry's Photo, a very large and reputable company here in Canada. The sales guy told me that Nikon Canada has advised them of the new dSLR releases prior to the end of April with products avialble by June. The D90 will be replaced and the D700 refreshed. They are also anticipating a new speedlight but had no additional information. Not a whole lot of inforoation and certainly nothing really new but I figured I share what I was told.

Hey. Looks like the guy from Henry's might be right!

At the really high ISO's the higher MPX cameras usually have more obvious noise. As to the video I see no problem unless they go that that new type of sensor to improve some aspect of video (not CCD or CMOS) and it doesn't handle noise as good either...

The D700 replacement will probably do fine in low light... It was just something I heard and thought I would mention to see if anybody else heard the same thing. It is still just a minute and unlikely rumor and doesn't have any support I know about.

And anyways 16-35mm f/4 is not a regular night shooters BFF and it isn't impossible that the D700 replacement will be either if MPX and video have high priorty.

kanuck said:
I am so glad I decided to stop waiting and get the D700 last Christmas...

Rumors and high expectations are sometime good as we avoid investing on evolutionary dead-end but on the other hand, like a double-edge sword, it can actually kill a company that did not deserved it. Competition is brutal and one may start leaking fantastic specs for a variety of reasons, some well intended and others not. When a revolution is announced, every one is holding their dollars in an attempt to outsmart timing and losers and in the meantime, the current product do not sell, crippling engineering capacities and sometime a whole pan of an industry. This is why Nikon is hiding their plan. When the buyers finally come to their senses and are ready to put down the cash, it is sometime too late as the manufacturer got wiped out of the face of earth. I am from the wireless telecom and it happened to us, we had the better product, far superior than anything on the market, with capacities that was making our competitors dizzy and 1500 heads strong and we are dead. Others end-up winning, not necessarily because they have better products but sometime just because they could survive the mass extinction event. After the effect of the blast dissipates, there is no choice but to buy on the crap that has survived.

I seriously hope we are not doing this to our love ones. Forefront technology is far from being simple and as the say goes, nine women cannot deliver a baby in one month. If Nikon has not put new high-end DSLRs on the market, it’s probably because it is not ready as it would be stupid not to unleash the competition killers and therefore we perhaps should hold our cries a bit. I think for the sake of fairness, all the fake “insiders” should come out of the closet.

As for me, perhaps I should have bought my dream D700 when I had the money. Now I have to wait for my cash to rebuild and its killing me.
