For people who what to upgrade above a d300S for whatever reason. either because they want to up grade their older system and skip over the D300S feature set or just want capabilities above the D300S. The closest(along the upgrade path) choice at the moment is the D700. Looking into the future the other choices would be the D300S replacement(D400) or the D700 replacements(D700 S,X,D800,D900)

So the real choice for someone who wants features points above the D300S is whether to go FF with the D700 or to wait for the D400. If I have the money I would go D700 as it can still use my DX lenses and I have several FX lenses as well. and get the D400 when that is available. I shoot with to cameras anyway.

Maybe a little different for me in OZ. My camera shop wants to sell me the D700 for $3700 (US$3396) ...the salesguy even kept a straight face. Ebay and a local seller but a grey import is $2400 (US$2200). That and the availability of D700 in Australia on a 2nd hand market is low and with an x/s update I dont see that anything will change but for the pressure on the D700 price to rise from demand.

When I buy it (inside next fortnight), I'll post the price here and the sell price I get for the D90. You can compare later on and we can see if I was thinking too hard.

i am in the same boat, I don't think i would use video as i don't know, are we just waiting to see what the new 700 is all about. Like we don't want to miss out on the party. I am thinking.. just get the 700 if the new 700 is good, than sell the current 700 and just upgrade, i just cant seem to hit the checkout button

Ant, that is brilliant, you are clearly a thinking fellow. Oh wait, it's too late for that. Actually, I like your strategy no matter what happens to the price of the D700. I won't say I haven't been tempted to do the same thing and keep the D90 for video. Real photographers will hate me for saying it but I want video when I go full frame. I'm not in a hurry because I'm loving my D90, but if I didn't want video the D700 is all the camera I would ever use and I would buy it whenever I had the money. In fact, a D700s (which would be to the D700 as the D300s is to the D300) is exactly what I'm waiting for.

its a little hard to do but take both cameras and hold the viewfinder of each to different eyes at the same time...

Hey Pete, new personality yes, Im quiet and demure now. Hope you've got heaps of pics for me to loook at. No I dont think I did the exit thing, just been away is all. Hey it really does put a crick in your neck.

Not so sure Adam and the guy that likes blue curtains. There is a lot (a lot) of noise about those waiting on a used D700. Its not like anything that has come before as the D700 is in a unique place.
It all comes down to lens ownership too and I think the D700 is of interest to those that would consider the D700 as a second body to their D300. They have a lens or two that performs on FF and want to dip their toe. Others building their FF lens plans might be only partway and again a D700 now seems a good choice.

I wouldn't worry about the D700 increasing in price if an 's' comes out. The D300's price (used at least) dropped very quickly after the D300s was released, didn't it? You can find used D300's at around $1000 pretty easily now.

I, like Mr J.Apple, am soon to replace my treasured D90 with a D700 or its soon to be announced replacement.

Yes I appreciate that it might sound like preparing the nursery and bringing a new baby home ...but thats exactly what its like. It takes time to build a FF lens plan ...for me it was almost 4-months (insert stupid grin here).

I however have a plan so cunning that if you put a tail on it you'd call it a weasel.

At present the D90 is at less than its original price but for the moment is holding its own. It is a popular model and its replacement is still a little while away and is not a participant in the rumor mill ...well not yet anyway.

So its time to sell and some might say "but Ant, its just a couple of hundred, no biggie". And I would reply, "then give thee a couple of hundred coz I want a 70-200vrII".

The D700 rumors are hot and a replacement seems likely soon. The news of an x or s is one possibility, the D800 another. If it is an x or s then the revisions might only be minor and maybe more related to video, prices will increase and the D700 price will be forced upward as stocks deplete and there will even be few 2nd hand sales. Existing owners will hang onto what they already have.
If a replacement then it will be a premium price and I can always upgrade again when the heat comes off. If you look at the comments in relation to the D800 there are voices saying yea, I want an 18Mp FF in a small body and I'd upgrade right away. "Puff" I say", but really wanting to say something else

So Im thinking of buying the D700 now.

Absolutely untrue I say ...the bit about brilliant though is reasonable enough.

I also remind Mr Apple that he should add a cable for the D700 to his Phottix Plato order.
