That's only because the D90 uses noise reduction, even if NR is turned off, while on the D300/D300s when you turn of NR it really is turned off. You can see a difference in detail at high ISOs.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think I'll take the advice and pass it up - I'm sad to see/hear that the sensor really isn't that much of an improvement. Oh welll

Its the same sensor, for the most part, what were you expecting? One reason that is often overlooked about the D300/D300s over the D90 is that the latter lacks 14bit RAW, which is only really useful if you need to pull a lot of data back in shadows, without creating too much noise.

view finder alone is worth the upgrade - have you picked one up and looked through it? 100% is so nice. . .

kellenfreeman - IMHO no, neither the AF, viewfinder or additional bracketing is worth the additional cash - better invest in lenses. also, if You are doing travel photography remember that d300s is heavier and bigger than d90

For landscapes there is one advantage D300s has if you are after HDR, it can do 5, 7 or 9 auto bracketing exposures instead of just 3 as D90 does.
Auto focus is better and faster too, viewfinder is also much better, body is pro built ...
All in all not an earthshaking difference but D300s is better overall, is it worth for you is something for you to decide.

From what I have gathered there isn't too much of an improvement on the sensor from the D90 to D300s. So for landscapes there's not really a difference. For sports, the D300s' focus system will be better. I'm not sure how much better the video function on the D300s is over the D90.

Since the D90 is smaller it would probably be better for you trip to Italy.

If it were me I wouldn't bother with the upgrade at this point. Not a big enough difference. I'd wait for the next new camera since it should have much better video capabilities / functionality.

So, I have a D90 but a friend might want to buy it off me, making the price for the D300s much more affordable... I'd use it for sports and landscape photography, but also portraiture here and there... also, I'd really like to get into video. Not to mention I have a 1 month trip to Italy coming up this summer...

Is the upgrade worth it? Should I just settle for the D90 and ignore my bad case of NAS?

Pros/Cons from D300/D300s users?
