niko - I have DX cameras as You know, and right now I have 24-70/2.8 and... I'm not very pleased with it. sure it's a great piece of glass, but it's rather long. If I get FX body once (still don't know either I need it or not :) ) 16-35 will give me the ability to use filters (I do wildlife and travel photography, so using at least UV filter is pretty desirable for me) on the contrary 16-35 on DX is also nice "wedding" lens 24-52 and $500 is... a price of refurbished d5000 or nice spectrometer set or more than half of the ticket to visit You in Texas :D

I'd rather have the 16-35 than the 14-24 because it's cheaper it takes filters (like Adam mentioned). I would be constantly worried about scratching the front element on the 14-24. I won't get it until (if?) I go full frame, though.

I think that it is similar to the AF-S DX 16-85mm VR lens price point compared to the 18-200mm lens.

The difference in price between the 16-35 and 14-24 is "only" $500USD. If you get the 24-70 the difference is only $400. When you are already spending over $1000USD for the lens anyway why not just go for the 14-24 or 24-70?

I think that the price of 16-35 is rather low, even comparing to 14-24. This two lenses are target towards different customers. 16-35/f4 is a perfect landscape lens (fit's 77mm filters), perfect street photography lens (especially during nights) and IMHO it's gonna be a big seller.

This has been one of my concerns, that FX bodies and lens prices are kept high and that the quality of the DX bodies and lens is kept low. There are those of us who disire the midrange such as the D300 or even the D90 with metal mount lenses with reasonable aperature and distance scales such as the AF-S DX 10-24mm.

I just hope they do not forget about the middle!

I like bright viewfinders so for me I'll keep f2.8 and just use it at f4 :^)
I don't mind paying a few hundred $$$ more in price difference. I really hope the next f4 lens is more affordable. If not then that would mean that Nikon intends to keep full frame at a higher price level and push DX as the "cheaper" alternative :^(

Yeah, I never understood the f/4 thing, but I guess since Canon has it, Nikon has to as well. . .

well, at least they are updating the 24-120 VR and making it f/4 (fingers crossed), so we could potentially have some pretty nice, sharp FX lenses soon!

If I switch and get rid of my 17-55 DX lens, this would be a nice/comparable trade IMO. . .I'll wait for reviews though. . .

kinda costly?! I say for a "cheaper" f4 lens it's very expensive. I would just save up a bit more and get a f2.8 lens instead.
