Yes, I remember now!

Yeah, maybe you wouldn't want the 200-400 anymore after the review?

Didn't someone on this forum want a 200-400 F4 but went for a 300 2.8 instead?

I like Thom quite a bit for his thoughtful reviews. Makes me want a new 100-500 or redone 80-400 that much more. I wonder why his results were the best with D90 and D300 bodies, that's not what I would have expected. Since I have no plans for an African Safari, I can take the lens off my wish list. Not going to be a lens I want for landscape work.

Thanks, I hadn't checked Thom lately.

Better AF systems in those two cameras. Well kind of. The D90 uses the same AF system as the D200 which is shared by at least one of the D2 series so I don't know really.

I'm really glad I got the 300 2.8 now and in a way glad I got the older AF-S version. It seems that the newer lenses Nikon makes often are lacking in something in order to update something else. That distance issue would drive me crazy. I shot some Bison in San Francisco (don't ask, I have no idea why they're where they are) and they were a good distance away from me in their paddock. I was pleased with the results.

This Bison was definitely more than 300 feet away. From what Thon said the 200-400 certainly would not have achieved results like this. Wow and that was my dream lens at one time.

Finally, after 7 years Thom Hogan managed to write the review of this lens. As it's very well written review, and describes one of the most desired lens, I've decided to post the LINK over here.
