To you who do not know this lens, it is shortest when at 35mm and expands when going towards 17 and 55. It is very easy to turn around 35mm and becomes increasingly more firm towards the 17 and 55. I suspect a new one to be more firm around the whole zooming range.

Cannot hurt to take it in and get an estimate, just send it to the Nikon repair center in Windsor Ontario or Richmond BC.

I live in South Korea and I dropped my 50mm 1.4D so the front element had to be polished and the filter flange replaced. This lens is 10 years old. Repairs here only take about 5-7 days and we have two major Nikon service centers. You can have your lens restored to their original condition as well as have them calibrated, but the problem for most people is the extremely high shipping costs. Maybe you could take it into a lens repair shop in your area rather than a licensed Nikon shop?

Hello SVA what part of the world are you from? You can send it to Nikon service to get an estimate for repairs. If it's too expensive then you can just decline and get the "broken" lens back.
