adamz, you are spot-on. The D3x has the same pixel density as the D300/D90 so cropping should not be an issue on the "bigger daddy". Lets wait and see!

matstar - D700 and D300 are two totally different cameras, both are semi-professional models, but both of them are dedicated for different kinds of photographers. D700 is a great portrait camera, and basically for wide lenses, unfortunately it's rather unusable for shooting wildlife (maybe too general, but...) where d300 crop factor gives you a lot more, also the resolution of d300 is more suitable for long lenses - try to crop a 13Mpx picture by 50% and You will see what I'm talking about.

There is a breath taking difference between D3/D700 pictures and D3X pictures at normal ISO. So it's no surprise that many people would like to see the sensor from the D3X in the D700x...

Keep in mind that the sensor of the D700 performs very well in low light partially because the pixel density is low. If a new model comes out with twice the pixel density (D3x sensor), I will be surprised if the low light performance is better. This IS a major reason (imo) to buy the D700 over the D300/D90. How many MP's do we need... come-on, really!?

Because Nikon has not provided a road map. It's as simple as that.

Just go and buy the camera and start taking pictures, as You and Your photography will benefit more from this than waiting for a new release.

I doubt that there will be a D700x in 2009 (if at all).

Get the D700, as with what mb says, there will not be a D700x, not whilst there is a D3.

If Nikon were to somehow change the rules they play by, and get rid of the D3, then it might happen, but not now, as any update to the D700 would make it an equal (or better specified) partner to the D3, and for a couple of thou cheaper.

Somehow, I don't see Nikon doing that.

If there is something to come out of Nikon to replace the D700, it will be around the time that the D4 is announced, and it will not be until the end of this year, or the first quarter of next at the earliest.

Why is everyone asking this same question? There is never a good time to buy a camera because eventually you will loose money, unless you are making your living out of it and could then consider this as a production costs. Actually you are loosing money as you walk out of the shop or simply by opening your mail ordered baby.
But if you keep on waiting for the right time you could end up never buying any camera at all.
There will always be a better one for less money, in a month or two or couple of months does not matter.
So if you want it go and get it now and don’t look back, go straight to the hills and shoot this baby, it is what it is for, not for bragging about or saving money.
And, in this particular case, be sure there will be no D700x in months to come, if you really have to worry about that.

Having soon saved up the cash for a D700 I'm not very fond of the idea of a D700x being released just after buying the D700. Should I wait til after the summer?
