I do not understand why it is so difficult to take your camera to Nikon service for cleanup.
Excessive use of alcohol based solutions found in most retail available swabs could damage coating on a filter you are cleaning (you are not actually touching the sensor chip as we all know).

Ah, I see. Thanks adamz. So the parts that I circled is the dust spot. I've looked at it with the mirror up already, there's this white speck on it. I'm pretty sure it's a piece of dust.

Just cleaned my sensor yesterday on my D200 with the swab+cleaning solution (methanol?) method, it's easy. Still really makes me appreciate how effective Nikon's airflow+sensorshake automated cleaning is.

I've been cleaning my own for 3-4 years w/o any problems. Using the blower has not done the trick for me.

I mount mine onto a small, desktop tripod, lock up the mirror, then using dust-free wipes mounted on a custom cut spatula, and Eclipse solution, I make 4-6 passes over the filter, and dust-begone.

The most important aspect is not to press hard. Use light(ish) pressure.

Check out these links and one should suit you: http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/links.html

I just thought of it: have you checked youtube for a how-to? I am willing to bet you a D700 that you'll find at least one video.

Just read up and ensure that YOUR particular filter is suited for cleaning. I seem to recall that just as I was reading on how-to, Canon was introducing a new model which they were not sure about the suitability of certain approaches.

Of course, you can sent it in, but, at $50 plus $20 shipping both ways ...... Plus you are w/o a camera for a while.

Just a thought.

G'luck.

I generally use a vacuum and wet swabs (i think greenclean) for the sensor.
I get way too much dust on the sensor from changing lenses (maybe I'm too slow at that), but going to the shop every time isn't really that lucrative an option. I might rethink this strategy when I get the D300/D400 though :)

That's what I was thinking, I was moving from an air conditioned room to a very humid outside area. Zooming plus the humidity might have stuck it on harder.

Every Nikon DSLR has mirror lock up position for sensor cleaning, so please do not use bulb or something like that; you can break your camera.
After locking the mirror you could try blowing of the dust (with rubber blower not with your own breath) from the sensor assembly and than use very small vacuum cleaner to pick up the dust from surrounding area. Never touch the sensor assembly or anything inside the camera without special and clean tools. None of these would work though if the dust is highly electrically charged or if you have moist or oil inside your camera.

If the dust has the opposite charge of the sensor, that prevents it from coming off. I once had a similar problem. Switch the camera to manual mode, and set the shutterspeed to bulb. Have somebody hold the shutter open while you blow at the dust. Since the camera's taking a picture, the charges in the sensor are changing, and the dust may come loose.

Yeah, I had a feeling it wasn't going to be a 2 minute fix. :D

Thanks guys. I think I'll have to make do with that dust spot, I mean it is annoying, but I'm not really any pro, so it doesn't matter all that much.

By the way, I think B and H has a cleaning program too right? I really don't want to ship it.
