The original post was 2 Years ago guys. The spammer just found the thread.

There was something way back then that was well documented and Nikon fixed it - 2 years ago.

My 70-200 VRII has no visible dust or defects looking through the lens only with the naked eye. But I can ensure you there is dust in it. If I was to take a bore scope light and look close,I am sure it will be there. But I don't look because I know it is there and don't care. Doesn't affect the IQ. Every lens has very small dust particles unless they are assembled like they do Intel processors or in a vacuum.

Well this is refreshing. Instead of "what's wrong with my....." it's "what's right with my.....". Although I don't have that lens I'm inclined to think that the flake issue could have been due to an individual ingredient flaw in whatever Nikon coats the lens bodies with. This is often the case in the medication manufacturing process - 1 ingredient alteration screws up the whole product outcome.

SkintBrit said:
Mine's perfect too. I think the term "batch" when describing professional lenses is a misnomer. Pro lenses particularly, have a lot of hand finishing/polishing and assembly, so the idea that this fully automatic robot has had a stroppy turn, and made a load of sub-standard product is incorrect. Some of the individual components that make up the lens can of course have issues, but these should be picked up in the vigorous QC department.

But if a dodgy batch of parts comes in and isn't checked (QC batch checking protocols allow this) or discovered in final assembly/inspection/test, then there you have it - a bad batch of lenses. Most quality systems are reactive not proactive so sh*t happens - hopefully only once per problem though.

Nikon pretty much admitted there's nothing wrong with the 70-200 to begin with, so you probably just received a lens with a prettier inside.

I have a 70-200 VR II and other groups have discussion on flaws with the lens, such as dust inside or flakes, irregular paint or casting surfaces and damaged threads.

I carefully examined my lens, as did two friends who also own it. ZERO dust. It looks like mine was vacuumed out! No flakes and surfaces are evenly colored with no flaking. Threads are also perfect. I used a very bright LED flashlight and carefully examined my lens on an off the camera. It has NONE of the flaws, nor does mine rattle or make virtually ANY noise when attached to the D700. You have to strain to hear VR operate at all.

I believe that the issues are for a bad batch of lenses, since no other copy I've seen has these problems. No big deal. Just wait a bit and order. It's a spectacular lens for 90% of what I used the old one for and I'm glad I own it. As I stated before, my sample is sharper than the 200mm Micro, Tamron 180 DI and 80-200 2.8 AF-D WIDE OPEN.

A few new samples here....

http://GhostLight.zenfolio.com/p953480034/slideshow

This is not to minimize people who have had issues. They are quite obviously for real. I'm just saying that this is not some sudden dropping of the ball by Nikon; just a wrinkle in a new product.

Cheers!
