Yup, back when nobody cared if Kodak didn't have a 1080p, 24mp, high ISO camera ;^)

What, no one like the idea of a wedding photographer playing Pac-Man while shooting a wedding. :-)

That would be perfect for when everyone is waiting for the groom to show up :^)

Here's the picture I mentioned earlier. This is a real camera that was hacked and not a photoshop fake.

Sometimes it's at home. A good panoramic opportunity can just sneak up on you... ;-)

That HDR app is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about, Willis. +1 on focus bracketing. Warprints, you sound like alpha complaining about video. You wouldn't have to play them.

pher said:
Adjustable scroll speed when navigating zoomed in photos.

Live view histogram.

How about a playstation portable-style joystick for the navigation? That would also make the donkey kong experience better for Niko and me. ;-) I'd like a histogram in live view. In movie mode, too.

Niko, my games suggestion was a little bit tongue-in-cheek. I really just wanted to see some good things that future firmware could do.

Take that bracketing limitation that aesnakes mentioned, for example. You know that is just Nikon crippling the hardware using the firmware because there's no reason the hardware couldn't do a 5- or 9-shot series.

I'd like to have a pano help function that shows what was in the last frame(s?). I've had to crop handheld panos because I wasn't careful keeping the horizon at the same level in all the shots.

I'd be all for an HDR app. I just got one for my iPhone today. Check out this snap from the balcony at the office:

Its a two image composite shot, processed, and posted to flickr in under 60 seconds. Can your camera do that?

Even better, this app only cost me $2

I'd also like to see a focus bracketing app.

Ewww, please no games.

Outside of the usual video complaints I'd like to be able to record pics to one slot, and video to another. Not just overflow or JPG/RAW separation.

Adjustable scroll speed when navigating zoomed in photos.

On screen audio levels.

On screen focus meter/numbers. Can be arbitrary. Would be useful for manual focus on stills also.

Live view histogram.

Well I dont know if the D90 will ever get one but I would like to see the bracketing function a bit better. I know other cameras have higher frame numbers but I think the D90 maxes out at 3. I would like to choose more frames like 5-10 to bracket. This is the only feature i can think of missing in this camera and I hope im not just missing something.

I posted a picture of Donkey Kong being played on a Kodak digital camera once before. I'll look for it and post it again.

This really has more to do with Nikon competing against mobile phones.

"I need to make a phone call. Here use my smartphone."
"I need to check my email. Here use my smartphone."
"I need to take a picture. Here use my smartphone."
"I need to shoot some video. Here use my smartphone."
"I need to find an address. Here use my smartphone."

A "normal" camera can't compete against that kind of versatility!

I was sitting somewhere today with neither a camera nor wifi (horror!), and pulled out my $40 sansa e250 that has rockbox installed on it. So I was playing doom on it—it actually does a pretty good job running it—and started thinking about what these tiny ARM processors can do these days. Why shouldn't my camera be able to do some of the things that my iPod touch can do?

I thought we could list some things that camera firmware of the future could do just in case Nikon ever reads things like this (probably a presumptuous notion). Or, they could just open up the development, release a stable version and let people choose to live on the bleeding edge if they want to get the newest features. Conservative types and adventurous types could both be satisfied.

Here are a couple features I'd like.

1. I've often wanted to be able to give pictures to family members or friends but it's usually such a hassle because there's no easy way to do it right after you take them. These days almost everyone has a GB or two of SD memory on them, in a phone or maybe their own camera or whatever. I'd like to be able to select a batch of NEFs, have them processed to jpeg and put on the buffer so that then the memory card can be switched and the pictures can be written to the other card from the buffer. Of course, dual slots could also solve this problem.

2. Peggle. Seriously.
