How about an extra battery for your dxx, dxxx, or dxxxx and swap it out as needed? Small, light, cheap, and you don't look like a "photographer" with nice gear to steal.

My point is exactly that... why carry around the equivalent of a d3 for family travel pics? which adding the battery pack essentially would turn a D700 into (but even heavier). I wish I had a d90/d5000 just for this reason. But I'll settle for my D700 with small prime.

As for the topic at hand: I'm a senior in high school and I use the old fashioned method. I don't like LiveView because I'm a traditionalist and I was taught to do it the original way and because I personally don't think you can really make a good composition at arm's length, nor can it be at all comfortable to look at a screen and try to focus.

I am an old person in a young'un's shoes. I prefer to do everything manually.

Honestly, I can't wait to upgrade to a DSLR with D-Movie. I think it would be awesome to have that ability, even if it's not the highest quality.

I was being facetious. If you think five minute 720p is somehow a disadvantage - it's not.

So were are old and grumpy because we don't find live view very useful? I have a few uses for live view, manually setting white balance, and product photography. As for video, that is what camcorders are for. Why limit yourself with the 5 minute 720p video of a DSLR, when you can shoot for hours with a camcorder?

This thread has gotten funny. Of course everyone on here sounds grumpy; IT'S THE PET PEEVES THREAD!!! It's supposed to be about things that bother us.

I'll add self-righteous posters to my list pet peeves. HAHA!

But for real, here's another one.... people who refuse to recognize that a good camera takes better photos than their cell phone. Just because we can tell what the picture is of doesn't mean it's good enough. (That's for my iPhone toting, instantly updating to facebook father - embarrassing)

Lol so true. If live view gets the job done or helps you accomplish whatever you want, then who cares. These are only tools to make our lives easier.

I always get mad when people put down the autofocus lenses. "Ohh back in my day we didn't have autofocus and it was so awesome" You aren't a real photographer if you are using autofocus. Blah blah blah

Or better yet, just don't pass judgment at all. While this thread is fun one has to ask, does it really matter how someone else uses their personal equipment? Does it really have any impact on our lives?

I have a D90 and thus live view, and whenever i use it as described above, I have a good reason for it... (out of reach, need a higher/lower angle, just need a quick shot) so make sure before you judge someone for it, that you know why they're doing it...

Good post, I find I use liveview for the occasional landscape shot and thats about it. I'd never use it in handheld mode. I agree that a person definately should learn to compose through their viewfinder just like in the days of film. Otherwise you might as well go out and buy a simple point and shoot digital camera! ^^

This being said I have gotten some excellent shots through liveview set to tripod mode. Its a real battery killer though...

Not when the viewfinder is about the size of a peanut. My ancient point and shoot has a minuscule viewfinder, do you really expect me to use it unless I absolutely needed it?

It's about the size of a squared off peanut, if you really want to know.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with 35+ years of experience, photography classes taken and taught, etc.

That is a big one, people assuming you need an expensive camera to take good pictures!

One of my pet peeves is when I guess I accidently take a good photograph, and when someone comments on the print, my wife says "Of course it's a good picture. Bill spent a lot of money on that camera." Thank you, wife.

The grips for lower end cameras are often used by people with big hands, when all their budget allows is a D40/D60/D3000 type of camera, don't be a hater.

Battery grips are only good for event where you either need to shoot thousands and thousand of pictures and your arms are going to hurt because you have to keep tilting the camera all the way around to get a vertical shot.

If I shot weddings more frequently I would probably get on for my D700/D300 setup but I sure as hell would be leaving it at home when I travel.

I don't have a problem with that (as in a digital waist-level finder). I have a problem with people using liveview ALL the time like a P&S.

it bothers me when people use two fingers to focus the lens from the side or top, instead of cradling the bottom.

And alpha, don't hate on the live view with the articulated screen, it's essentially a digital bs version of a waist-level finder like those found on most twin lens reflexes and medium format SLRs.

Yeah, I learned to shoot properly too. Not that I had much of a choice, as if my F2 Photomic or my D70 had liveview.

The only purpose I've found for liveview on my D300 is manual focusing. Easy and accurate. I tried using it for overhead once, but like you guys said, much too much camera shake. And I don't have VR or anything, so it just doesn't work for me.

A friend of mine got a D5000 for Hanukkah, and he told me he loves using liveview all the time with the articulating screen. I didn't say anything, but...

I see that too and just wish I had the kind of money they have to just blow on a good camera without ever having to learn how to use it, must be nice.

I never shot film but still learned to shoot the proper way. It just makes sense. I used live view once when I was in Seattle because of the crowds where I was. I hated it and looked retarded so I waited for a better opportunity to shoot properly. Only other time I use live view are for those rare times I shoot a video.
