I think cameras should have fierce sounding names like mobile phones

N-Storm should have been the D700 replacement!

Sometimes confusion among names is intentionally used to confuse consumers, especially for lower end models. I remember having a conversation with someone who adamantly refused to consider getting a D40 because it was a cheap consumer model, but was perfectly fine with a D3000.

But yes, I wished Nikon and Canon used a consistent numbering system, especially with the lower end models. I'd like to think they've gotten a good system now, but who knows.

honestly, I think they should put a letter after then "D" and then numbers

so: entry DSLRs would be DE
advance/amateur DA
pro dx DDP
beginner fx DF
Pro FX DFP

or something like that, then we could use the same numbers : DE4 , DA4 , DDP4 , DF4 , DFP4, and we can still add the "S" or "X" after : eg: DPF4X

All pro cameras will have three letters

time line would be eaiser, as all the 4s would be around the same time, you won't get tied up with the time line for the : D70, D700, D7000, D7X.........they all cmae out about the same time ...right?

I herby submit the above to NIKON's name the camera contest , and donate all prizes to NR for future contest on NR.

given how significant the pricing has fallen on the D5k and D90, I'm going to assume they'll collapse the numbering and hopefully start all over FRESH!!

(and confuse us all more, lol!)

LOL, that is even more confusing! This was my thought process: V100 » D300 » D300 Has No Video » D300S » Jonny got a D300S!

And then I reread your post and realized my mistake! 8^D

Maybe they'll just start all their numbers over with V (for video). I think I'll start calling the D3s the V1, the D300s the V10 (incidentally goes perfectly with the MB-D10 grip), the D90 the V100, and the D5000 the V1000. I helped Nikon out and made the numbers go in some kind of logical order. Just so you guys don't get confused...

BTW, I'm loving my V100!

nice visual soap. . .hmm. . .seems like the D900 and D800 combo makes MORE sense. . .especially since they went nutty with the D3000 and D5000. . .or MAYBE the D90 replacement will be called the D9000!!

sigh. . .we have a busy 8 weeks ahead!

I always wondered if they never went lower than 40 because of Canon's early D30. Though they did go D60 six years after Canon did.

If you think this is confusing then wait until Nikon begins running out of names! Then they'll start having the D750, the D95, etc. It'll start getting pretty ugly if you ask me!

Oh, and you may have noticed that Nikon has not gone below D40, I think they're leaving that open for the flagships in case they start going into the double digits.

As for D900, I ain't got a clue.

The Dx0 bodies have been barely sequential, even taking into account the variety of categories they have been marketed to fill.
70 to 80 to 90 is fine, but 50 to 40x to 60 is off.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Nikon_DSLR_cameras
Not sure I completely agree with the wikipedia timeline organization, as they group by price-point whereas I feel the 3000 is more of a 60 than a 40, despite its price in relation to the others of its generation.

Regardless of if you feel the same way about that or not, the chart does help to visualize the progression, IMHO.

This is just a post to clarify rumors, so mod's, delete modify or do whatever to make sure this is correct.

What the heck is the D900?

Is it rumored to be the D700 or D90 replacement?

Can someone post a roadmap of when things were released, I though both the D90 and D700 were due for replacement THIS year because both use sensors from the infamous D3/D300 announcement of 2007 (D700 in late '08 and D90 in mid '08)?

I'm stoked for whatever body, because I plan on seguing into FX by end of 2010/early 2011, but. . . .in the interim. . . .

Just thought Nikon's numbering was sequential by values of 10 or 100 punctuated with 's', 'x', or 'h'. . .
