Either would be great. The D5100 is due for an update, but because of this they can be found for a steal really and for starting out they are more then enough camera for anyone. The D3200 is newer and has better performance and the newer sensor, but still a new camera price. You will most likely upgrade in the future if you get the bug, but for the price either are nice. I still have my D5000 and love it...just waiting for a new upper level body to be released for my upgrade. Just realize you don't have to get it all at one time. Get the kit and learn then add to it later when you figure out what you need. Nikon in the last couple of years has released some pretty good budget friendly lenses like the 35 F1.8G mentioned above and the 40 F2.8 micro.

Either with their 18-55mm "kit lens" is fine and will provide you with lots of things to learn. The D3200 has the latest technology sensor between the two (D5100 will be replaced next year with a newer model) so it is probably your best bet. Start by learning how to use the P mode, then the S mode, then the A mode and finally the M mode to produce the effect you are seeking in an image. Also practice using + or - exposure compensation and the use of different Picture Controls (for example notice the difference between Vivid and Portrait setting and learn to use each when appropriate). After a few months get an AF-S 35mm f1.8 G DX lens to practice low light shooting. It should take you a year or two before you want to do things your equipment cannot do. By the time you "bump up" against the limitations of your D3200, Nikon will have a whole new line of cameras from which to choose a replacement. After you get your camera post your best images in PAD. Look at others PAD postings. Ask yourself "how did they do that?" and learn.

Hello nikon users, I'm new to the world of photograhy and about ready buy a camera. Borrowed a friends camera and loved taking shots, so nnow I want my own. I figured I would buy something not too expensive to start with, just to make sure I truly like phography. I assumed the d3200 or the d5100 was the best bet for me. With all the knowledge and experience you members have, should i get one of those cameras, or something else? Thanks for the help guys, hope to be posting pics soon!

SORRY IF THIS WAS ALREADY POSTED!!!
