IF Nikon were to do a FX in a D90 body, it would have to be even more crippled than a D400. . .so, I would guess they'd remove the AF motor and FORCE use of their AF-S lenses. . .which is kind of smart, since most pro's have AF-D lenses and would be forced to stick with the D700/800/D3s lineage. . .

They could EVEN still keep a D90 body around with a DX sensor and a AF motor. . .so there would be a highly segmented market:

D3000-5000: 12mp DX no AF motor but D-movie (not on 3k); $550
D90 series: 12mp DX WITH AF motor; $800
D9000 series: 12mp FX with NO AF motor; $1400
D400: 16 or 18mp DX with AF motor (100% VF); $1700
D700s/800: 12mp FX WITH AF motor; $2600
D3s/D4: 16 or 18mp FX with AF motor (100% VF); $5200

I think I see what they're doing now . . .forcing body purchases based on existing lens repositories. . .I only have 2 lenses that REQUIRE a motor (11-16 2.8 and 24 2.8), but I would more than likely go with the D700(s)/800 series anyhow. . .

See, but I knew you would be, alpha, so I thought, "Why waste the time looking?" I'm sorry I left that part out of the stream of consciousness.

I think it's the 24, 25, 85 tilt-shift lenses released last january. But those won't AF on anything, so this is probably not a helpful comment. [he thought, as he pressed the send post button]

I only have 2 lenses that require a AF motor, but one of them is absolutely essential to me (The Tokina 11-16). The good news is that the Tokina takes pretty good shots even out of focus. I just manual focus or leave it focused to infinity on my D40, and everything is crisp enough for 6mp's. Still, I'd prefer it to AF.

I can see Nikon moving away from this for their consumer \ prosumer lines, but I doubt you'll see them drop it from the Dxxx lines or better within the next 10 years.

Anybody know what the most recently manufactured non-afs lens was?

I think both of those changes would be a mistake, mb. I'm not saying you're wrong; I just think many of their potential buyers would be put off by losing the motor and the top LCD.

I really hope you are right and that Nikon understands that but they have to cut costs.
Canon dropped AF motor and changed the mount as well some 20 years ago, anyway we shell see soon enough.

Only Nikon can tell but I think we could expect something in the range of D300s as we all do, and I think D400 will be in the same range by the time it show up and that should be no sooner than a year from today ...
"D90FX" will definitely be missing AF motor as far as I can tell, and most likely top LCD display so it will be more like D5000FX ...

It looks like the prices and direction and smell in the wind seem to point to a posible D90FX. Where do you think the price for this will be? I assume that it will have the D700 sensor. There will also be the D300S and D700S with the D3S sensor at the same time.

I think the price will be above the D300S but below the D400.

I would place the price between $ 1500 - 2000 US depending on which FX sensor it has
