Obviously, Nikon noticed the lack of new DSLR camera offerings.
They took advantage to announce the D3100 with AutoFocusing 1080i Video and a new 14mp sensor.
I expect to pick up mine at the local camera store on Sept 15th.
Hopefully, they will announce a D700s with this Video + stereo mic soon.

Defunk, we both are agreeing with each on most points. but this thread is about 1080p so what ever is you're point on this thread Nikon is behind. No matter what you think.

We all know that Nikon made that choice which I guarantee you million percent that Nikon is gutted by that but of course is not going to admit because it is bad publicity.

In today's world technology is changing in 2 year cycle, at some points even faster than that so if you don't act fast enough you will be left behind no matter how good you are.

Even the big boys like Sony, Panasonic, Arri etc are reinventing them self because of the DSLR market. Imagine if they didn't it what will happen to them? Eventually some no name company similar to what RED did few years ago which revolutionized the film industry maybe this company will do the same.

Anyway this debate can go forever but since this thread is about video we can freely say that our beloved Nikon needs refreshing up a bit because is behind.

We know that Nikon is focused on photography but if they don't adapt they will lose and that is simple, no mater what we think.

valonge, again I will reiterate, Nikon made a choice about 3 years ago not to go a certain path, and it was a different path than Canon.

Nikon, not unlike myself, probably figured that real photographers would be more worried about picture quality then video recording capabilities. Bravo for Canon, they have been doing video for decades, and they made the jump a matter of months before Nikon did.

To automatically jump ship or change your view of Nikon because Canon came out something first is just simply stupid. If you read any review Nikon trumps anything out there, both camera and in most lens categories as well. That's important.

Having 1080p recording for a video feature I will rarely use in comparison to image recording? Not important.

I went through the same thing with my television. I had a fantastic Samsung LCD, and I waited for the right Samsung LED LCD to come out, and eventually it did. For the same reason I haven't left Nikon.

I shoot with a D3s, and I am quite content, and I would say that the majority of Canon shooters are the ones who are left with the feeling of "limitation."

Well for photo camera yes I agree with you. But in terms of video Canon is way ahead.

If you do video, especially professionally, you likely have an HD video camera that is worth much more than even my D3s.

True, but since the introduction of video in DSLR my HD camera has been left behind because the industry over here has gone DSLR.

Have you used the video capabilities of the D3s before? Have you compared them to the likes of a 5DMKII? Have you compared the optics of Nikon's system vs. the Canon system?

I haven't don it personally but I know some professional DOP at Zacuto shootout 2010
http://www.zacuto.com/shootout , which have done some test with DSLRs to compare it with Fuji and Kodak and guess who came close to film? Canon 5DM2.

Just check the site and you see what I mean, these tests are done by professionals so they knew what they where doing. One thing that I find it interesting but wasn't surprised was the fact that they only used D3s against all Canon range of DSLR including the new arrival T2i.

Canon has spent an exorbitant amount of money on marketing the video capabilities of their cameras, Nikon has chosen not to do so, and at this point I think it was a smart choice.

I don't know about that mate! Since the introduction of the video in DSLR a lot of people bought Canon cameras over Nikon because of the video functionality so in terms of sales I don't know if that was a good choice because Canon has pressed hard in video mode and took the film industry by storm. It seems that every filmmaker has one.

It is shame because Nikon was the first one to introduce video and should of been the once to celebrate but not, Canon took it over to a next lever and are using it as marketing strategy.

No doubt that, I to think that Nikon is much better camera but when it comes to shooting video I am sorry to say but Nikon has lost the battle no matter what people here think.

You get the option to shoot manually which you don't get that on D90 and D300s. You choose you're ISO and SS but not on Nikon that is done by the camera, you also get to chose different frame rates whiles on Nikon you are only stuck to filmic look at 24fps.

I agree 100% The video on my D90 is pretty good as it is anyway. In fact I compared my D90 to the 50d, 5DmII, and D3s and came to the conclusion that canon has more bluff than bulk. The D3s won for obvious reasons but the D90 still didn't feel incomparable to it... Just merely stripped down (too much for most pros but not completely consumer trash). Other than some of the "large" stats the 50D preformed worse than the D90 and the 5d mII wasn't miles better. I mean 9 AF points? you've gotta be joking! and the Iso performance isn't any more impressive...

If the competition offers something better you obviously want to have that on you're camera, do you Defunk? I am sure that whatever camera you are using you would like to have a bit more which your camera doesn't offer.

If you are into video than you probably know the limitation that Nikon has at the moment but if not then you don't know what we are talking about.

We are not asking something just for the sake of it and because some one else has it as you mention but we need that feature for our own reasons.
Thanx

Kyoshi, even 720p sometime is to much because it all gets shrunk to 720 by 576 for broadcast. But when we see other cameras offer the Full HD, we like to have it on our Nikon cameras as well.

What most people don't likely realize is that Nikon, like all companies, make choices about current products approximately 3-5 years prior to it's release.

In my opinion, if HD video is THAT important to you, and has been, then you likely already own an HD video camera. If that is the case ... relax.

U are right. Not every demand has a serious reason (iphone)..
I would just love to see Nikon offering at least the same video qualtiy than Canon, which is available for quite some time.
[The Canon 550D offers this...
- 1.920 x 1.080 (29,97, 25, 23,976 B/s)
- 1.280 x 720 (59,94, 50 B/s)
- 640 x 480 (59,94, 50 B/s)]

So I shut up for now :/ and wait ;)

FYI, as was posted above 6 months ago the D90 got a video firmware update and it was quite limited.

Its pretty certain that the D90 and D5000 will get no more updates as the sensor cannot handle it (they both share a sensor).

Given that the D3100 is purported to have 1080p 24/30 all other models certainly will as well. if not something more (60fps? 120 or 240fps high speed? 2k?)

I'm with those of you who don't really care about, or want, video cabability on my DSLR. I've had some decent dedicated video cameras in the past, thinking video would be interesting, but it just doesn't do anything for me (as a photographer). I'd rather not has any extra buttons, software bloat, etc., on or in the camera. However, I do understand that some people actually want video cabability. Personally, I think you'd be better off buying a dedicated video camera, but that's just me ...

Yeah, that number is the frame rate (frames per second), so cinema rate (24 fps) at 1080p and cinema or the standard rate for NTSC regions (30 fps) at 720p.

Until the SLR's have proper movie function like a camcorder but with the advantages of SLR lenses, I'm not interested. I have movie on my D5000 but have never used it - I just read the manual, laughed and forgot about it. It seems like they launched a half developed product as a stop-gap.

thx,
I wrote this
"1080p/24 and 720p 30/24"
Not sure what 24 or 30/24 means. If that B/s it's quite short on the 550d in 50 in 720.

guess in case the 5000 and/or the D90 will get pimped as well in the same slot it might be even better then

keep my fingers crossed
