You know, the chain is only as strong as the weakest link

as for my experience through photography... I had one I'll probably never forget, back in my student times I went to a student meeting in Novosibirsk (Russia), and on the way back I was waiting for my plane, and there was such a beautiful light early in the morning, and all of the planes were standing on the landing field, so not thinking too much I took my minolta 505 with my tamron 300mm lens and pointed towards some of the planes... I took maybe 10 slides till I was escorted by two soldiers to a dark, empty hall to meet the boss :) it sounds funny at this point of the time, but wasn't so funny than... it was probably the only time when I felt so relieved when the plane finally took off from the ground (I've managed to keep my camera and my slides... had more luck than mind :) )

Yeah, I have no idea how I would handle it if I were in the same situation. I mean, with a digital camera, at least you can delete single photos. With a film camera, you pop open the back and all your photos are killed. How can I explain to a policeman that I can't delete it?

It sounds like you've got an aura of good luck, warprints. Gary Hart, George Wallace, and I'm not convinced you weren't down in Florida a couple of weeks ago. Jimmy Carter's presidency went pretty well after walking with you, from what I've heard. Could we hang out sometime?

While hiking in Big Sur I had the unenviable choice of saving myself as I slipped on a cliff or watching my F2A with 35/2 fall off my shoulder, and about 75 feet to rocks and surf. Replaced the camera, never got another 35/2.

I'll also never forget the thrill of diving with my Nikonos, each time, every time.

Too bad about all the post 9/11 changes. I certainly don't feel they've made any difference in our collective safety. I think we were better off before.

Lets see, how should I put this?? Well a rain storm, Rocky Mountian National Park, some huge rocks, a new pair Cowboy boots and a couble of Nikons?? I fell, the cameras stayed with me one was under my back acting as a friction brake, and sounding nasty, the other was being dragged behind me and not making anything like nice noises.. I was very lucky didn't slide into the void?? I managed to salvage both cameras considerably scared, and a couple of squared up lens hoods, but fully functional..Lesson learned Leather soled Cowboy boots, especially new ones and wet rocks make a bad mix..

And I tend to agree on the, Better off then before, Safety issue.. But it did create, a lot of new jobs, in the makeworks area :-(

Next year I will have been at this thing we all love called "Photography" for Sixty years!! Yeeks that is a long time, and I have had many interesting experiences and adventures both working as a Commercial Photographer and a Photojournalist throughtout many of those years.. Fortunately most of those experiences have been pleasurable and warmly remembered..

One interesting thing is that since 9-11 I have had more challanges and confrontations, and restrictions placed in front of me then in the entirity of my career before that time..

I think my most interesting photographic experience was one that still haunts me to this day. Back in 2001 when I 21, I went to the Grand Canyon with my brother. Around sunset near the famous picture frame peak, my brother did the old "back a little more ok good, good now just a little more, a little more.....STOP! and over the side I went. I have never been so freaked. Needless to say I was beyond fortunate that I was able to grab a handhold on a jagged rock that tore my hand to shreds but anchored me enough to find a second handhold until my brother rushed over to haul my dumbass back up. Of course in the process I tossed my F90x film body with 80-200 push pull down into the ravine. Even today nearly 10 years later I still get a nightmare about this maybe once a month.

I have had other close calls when traveling as well. Walking up ramps with too much gear onto boats like in Thailand. You know those 2 foot wide planks? Heavy gear in the front of a bike basket which throws the alignment of a bike all to hell. Leading to a crash. Salt water incidents.

NSX your topic was already discussed about a month ago. Members probably don't want to repeat themselves. Warprints this is STILL a very small forum. Out of 1500 plus members only about less than 50 actually participate on a regular basis. I'd even say less than 20 actually :^(

So give your post a little more time before you get a response. Besides Fridays are almost always dead around here.

Next time title your thread to say how you hate the D90 and watch everyone come running to read your post :^)

Didn't know that it was discussed already. I did a search for it and it didn't come up. Then you could close the topic.

lol, but did you take your picture with the President?

I once photographed George W Bush back when he was running for Governor of Texas. I was photographing him at an open outdoor public event. It was a different world back then so lots of people were crowded around him close to the podium. I was moving around to get a rear angle shot of him at the podium when I noticed two plain clothes State Troopers start talking into their wrist and looking in my direction! I'm thinking oh crap I'm going to get tackled to the ground, but I kept the camera up to my face as if my viewfinder would protect me.

Anyway I start to move back towards the front of the podium thinking the Troopers where talking about and watching me but as I moved I notice that their eyes were no longer looking straight at me. I quickly realized that I wasn't their focus. I turned around and then I notice this very suspicious looking "scruffy" guy a few feet behind me.

I look at him and he looks at me and he has this look of surprise that I suddenly turn around at him. I guess he thought I was a plain clothes cop of some kind and he just turned away and walked off. It was very strange? I watched him walk away for a second and then I turn back towards the podium. The State Troopers were still talking into their wrist, but now definitely looking at me.

I thought for sure they were going to ask me if I knew the guy or something but I continued "shooting" pictures of Bush and nothing more became of the "incident"

It was a very strange moment.

Like ND, I have too many experiences to come up with a best one. One of the more interesting ... I used to live just outside of Washington, D.C. When Carter was inaugurated, I went to the inaugural parade very early in the morning to find a good spot. I ended up at the end of Pennsylvania Avenue (White House side) so that I'd have the long view down PA Ave to the Capital Building. I was standing near a tower that was set up for television cameras and got to talking to the camera guys who were setting up. They eventually invited me to come up and watch the parade from the top of the tower (got some good pics from up there). Jimmy and Roselyn Carter were walking most of the parade route, and as the walked past the TV tower, I got down and walked with them. When we got to the White House, they went into the Presidential reviewing stand, and I mosied (?) around inside the restricted area taking photos. It took a while, but the secret service finally decided to challenge my presence. They were nice about it - no congressional hearings - and they escorted me out.

Forgot to answer your question Warprints.

Hmm... I've had several experiences throughout the years so it's hard to think of just one. I'll just say I've enjoyed meeting "most" of the people photography has brought into my path that I wouldn't have met otherwise.

I don't really have anything interesting, warprints, but you insist. Don't say I didn't warn you.

The most trouble I've been in as a photographer is earlier this year when I made my family run down a mountain after taking a panorama of my town. When we got to the top, there was this sheet of rain coming toward us and there was quite a bit of lightning. As I was taking the pano, my wife was saying things like "won't your tripod act like a lightning rod?" and "aren't you afraid of frying your equipment even if you have no regard for your life?" I finally got the shots, packed it up, and we ran to try to beat the rain, but we got completely soaked in the downpour. I guess it's a good thing she'll still hike with me.

Here's the shot if you're interested: Salt Lake City panorama.

So give your post a little more time before you get a response. Besides Fridays are almost always dead around here.

Next time title your thread to say how you hate the D90 and watch everyone come running to read your post :^)
