Like I said in the KR thread, sometimes I agree with him. I respectfully disagree that the aging of cameras isn't as fast as with computers. Microchips are microchips and they age as they age.

Having owned a D40, I agree that the gen 1's have great IQ. However Nikon will not produce both and I willing to bet that the D60 will be discontinued sooner rather than later.

gentoo - too much Ken Rockwell (I've made my homework with the 1st and 2nd gen cameras), and trust me with cameras is not the same as with computers - as the aging is not that fast (also the price drop), also the IQ between so called 1st gen cameras and 2nd gen cameras is not a really big difference if You know how to use the full abilities of Your camera; the difference is that the so called 2nd gen cameras have a lot of improvements for taking easier pictures for masses (like with the technology in cars)

I see what you meant now. Yes a D60 is cheaper than a D40 was a year ago. The D40 today you can pick up for about $350. Almost all of the gen 1 Nikons are very cheap now compared to their original prices. The gen 1's are being completely replaced by the gen 2's and this I believe is why the D60, D40 and even the D200 have fallen so much in price. Just like with computers, when the technology ages they are sold for half or less than half of what they once were to get rid of them.

Yes, the price is way too similar to the D90. If I were ever to change camera bodies, I would go with the D90 all the way. The D90 has all I need, plus the old lens compatibility that the D5000 will never offer. That $200 difference or so will be worth it in the lens compatibility for AF.

Gentoo, you're right, but that's not exactly what I was getting at. The D60 was a D40x replacement, but now Nikon seems content letting it slip into the place of entry level DSLR where the D40 used to sit. That's what I meant by the d40 replacement. If memory serves, it's cheaper to buy a D60 today than it was to buy a D40 a year ago.

The D60 replaced the D40x. Entry level cameras from both Ninon and Canon are often sold concurrently so it wouldn't be a replacement. However the D40x was discontinued when the D60 was released. They do this for those first time SLR buying moving up from point and shoots. With Nikon you had a choice between a 6MP and a 10 MP camera.

You and me shivaswrath, I've never paid much attention to the MSRP from other countries as I've been checking out local deals here in Hong Kong. If the MSRP is going up, that means they'll most likely go up locally here as well.

yeah i'd like to know if the D90 price is going up too!!

I have been waiting to buy either a D90 or D300 - was waiting for the press release to bring the price down, but at $729 USD for the D5000, we have an established "bottom" for the D90 - meaning, if I can get the body for $800, now's the time?!

Anyone know what was the previous "MSRP" for the D90 Kit? If the price has infact gone up, I'm gonna buy one this week. Been waiting for the 4/14 to see what's up.....and I'm ready to jump on the D90 wagon now. The Tilt/Swivel LCD on the D5000 is something I see myself breaking off in no time...LOL

I don't like the vari-angle display and prefer to be for the Dxxxx series of cameras only.

That makes sense, adamz, the D90 seems to me about 1-1.5 stops better than the D60 at high ISO, and since it's the same sensor, that's completely in line with my experiences.

just checked the dpreview, they uploaded some sample images (LINK) and it looks like, the highest usable iso in most of the situation is 1600, although in some case the iso 3200 also looks quite nice (depends on subject).

Yeah, it does seem the D60, D5000, and D90's price tags are a bit bunched and that the D60 and 5000 should both be brought down

tai - anyway it's overpriced, $550 for body, that would be really a great price and will make it a big seller, with price tag of $725 (body only) there's simply to small gap between this and much better d90 (which has a better screen, viewfinder and higher capacity battery).

way too expensive for a d40 replacement, and too big. for a $100 difference I'll go for d90 as it's simply a better camera. The "vari-angle" screen looks nice, although wonder how resistant it is.

It would be nice to have. It finally makes Live View useful. I do a lot of near street level shooting, and also some overhead "Spray & Prey" type stuff in crowds. I'd like to see this find its way to the D90 as well. Probably won't see this on the D700 or D3 because its a smaller LCD (2.7inches I think I read). Any word on the stats yet?

I think this is again "Nikon's first" - the LCD swivels down, for good or bad...

I don't think so, since it is an easy place for water to get inside of the camera. Unless of course they sealed it really really good.

No plans to purchase it, but it's exciting nonetheless. I wonder if the swivel screen will filter up the line into pro models.
