Actually you'd be surprised how the cold will decrease the shots per battery you get.

In my experiences the only thing that cold cold weather affects is battery life.

And with 4k shots off of a D3S battery it can't get very low relatively speaking.

Sometimes when we're on a fieldtrip or something it's raining, so a lot of teachers are saying "Shouldn't you put your camera away? You wouldn't want the rain to ruin it." And I always tell them my equipments going to be fine, and that it has been through a lot worse weather. Of course, they're always warning me that this is the one time it might fail. So I think I'll print out this picture to keep in my bag to show people EXACTLY what my Nikons are up to fight. That'll get me a good laugh!

I've been in Quebec when it was about -15 C, and my Nikon point and shoot worked fine. Yes, it went straight into my pocket when I was finished, I wasn't shooting at 9 FPS, I didn't keep my hands out for any extended period of time, I had 2 batteries with me, but it worked fine for what I needed it to do- snapshots.

It was February, and it was at night, around the 400th anniversary of Quebec's founding.

Awesome trip I had near the end of high school.

oh boy, i haven't had the pleasure of dragging my equipment around filled with snow, i have however had it out in minus 15 degrees celcius, which seemed to take its toll more on me than it did on the gear.

I can't quite figure out which lens it is, however since the collar/foot is on the front of the lens and not towards the back, it would rule the 300/2.8 out, 400 seems like a good bet, but i can't seem to spot the VR on/off ring, so it could be an older version.

Anyway, Nikon gear is really sturdy, some people are too protective about their gear, but then again i can understand why, your only camera dieing on you would really suck.

400mm f/2.8. The big handle/bracket mounted outboard means the 400 or 600; with the bracket that close to the objective I believe it's the 400. The bracket foot of the 300 is tiny by comparison.

It does? It looked more like a 400mm to me. It doesn't look like the new VR version either—the VR doesn't have a plaque with the specs. I think the camera's a D2_.

Doesn't look cold at all!

*cough*

I wonder how the weather resistance of the professional DSLRs stands up against that of the sealed P&S cameras.
