There's no TTL flash capability with the FM2, but it'll work in auto with the SB-27 or 28.
You might find this page useful: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonfmseries/fm2n/fm2manual/index4.htm#Flash

Thanks for that link too, I'm not too savvy on flash photography, I have a good bit of reading to do.

There's no problem with that, but I don't think the FM2 has TTL flash metering, so you'd have to set output manually.

The SB-600 has film TTL unlike the sb-700 so IF the FM2 does it will work perfectly, else as JA said it's manual only and one might be better served by a thyristor flash.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, just curious, would a SB-600 work if I decided to stick it on a FM2?

In short sell your SB-400 for $75 and put that money towards a flash with i-TTL AND manual.

I believe you are asking about simple optical triggers which ignore pre-flashes, warprints?

EDIT: just saw how old his post is.

A sync port such as in that link can not be added to the SB-400. The SB-400 is i-TTL only and needs a serial connection with the camera. i-TTL works by the camera telling the flash "ok, when I say 'go' you fire at 1/16th power. GO!" A sync port is a simple two-wire trigger for manual flashes. Even Nikon's three-pin TTL cords are Trigger, Ground, Quench, which still isn't enough for the SB-400.

The 400 is i-TTL only and can not be used off-camera without an i-TTL remote, like the new PocketWizards (the RP solution is a radio bridge for optical signals, right?. If so it wouldn't work with the 400 since it has no optical receiver), regardless I think this is off topic and a poor resurrection.

In short sell your SB-400 for $75 and put that money towards a flash with i-TTL AND manual.

I have a similar issue with an SB-400 I am trying to slave so that I can use it with my D300s and SB900. Found two things so far, not sure if the first one is relevant for either of our issues: http://dptnt.com/2010/01/how-to-add-a-pc-sync-port-to-camera-or-flash/ The 2nd possible solution is the Pocket Wizard but I still have plenty of reading to do to get my head around the subtleties involved in current world flash lighting. I am from the old Vivitar 272 and Nikon SB14 days after all. Don't want to spend a mint but I am currently doing all of this for me (with an eye toward a future small business if things go very very well.)

I seem to recall hearing that there were some accessory shoes (aftermarket, not Nikon) that couls be used on older flash units to make them compatable with the mutli flash triggering of newer flash units, e.g. old flashed could be triggered by the flash of a primary flash, but now, SB800s and SB900s (or the pop up on newer digitals) have a pre-flash, then the photo flash. The pre-flash triggers the olders units. Anyone know anything about this?
