I had something similar happen last night after I started using 2 new SD cards. 16GB Sandisk Class 10s. The LCD simply would not turn off. I had been shooting bracketing with exposure compensation, after disabling these and turning off the top LCD began turning off again. Just to check I went back and re-enabled these and again the LCD would not turn off like it should. Disabled bracketing and compensation and it worked again. Did I find a bug or is it possible my new cards are still the problem.

Correct, but it's random on all the cards that I have, it does it or not, with capriciousness. I see no pattern with lens, card, mode, shutter, aperture, flash setting, etc., and have not a clue what could cause it.

I've set my camera to clean on start and shut down, but that's not new - I set it like that from day one - and not what I think is causing this, since it appears 'random', but a pretty good guess.

I have no trouble with buffer or with unrecognizable files.

The only time the camera should not turn off is while the buffer is writting to the SD card. If the card fails to write or is slow to write, it could take a lot longer to clear the buffer, thus the camera not turning off once switched off. Have you tried different SD cards to see if this still happens?

I have 1.02, and I also have a typo, the battery drain _isn't_ onerous. I really can't tell that this is anything but something that just seems wrong.

And it is intermittent, not routine.

It has really caused any problems other than the camera should be 'off' when the switch goes 'off'.

I'm beginning to have the same problem with the D7000 not immediately turning off, but I always reformat the cards in the camera after downloading, and it doesn't seem to be related to video - my video is dedicated to slot 2, and that card is also reformated in the camera.

The camera _does_ shut off, eventually, and the battery drain is onerous - Thom Hogan has noted that leaving the camera on doesn't seem to matter much one what or the other concerning battery usage, and that's pretty much been my observation, but having it 'on' when it should be 'off' seems wrong.

I would also thing that that if I had a series of shots in the buffer, that would be one thing, but that wouldn't seem to be the case either.

These are the same cards Toshiba, and others, that I've use successfully for some time without fail. Again, no error messages or lost data, just not turning off with the switch.

I'm asking Nikon Support what they think.

Also, I found that if you record video and dont remove the video file first, before extracting the pictures, it will freeze everything up. Once i got the video off, I had no more problems

I had the same issue however, I never had an issue turning off the camera or the camera crashing or not responding.

I only had an issue with the card once I loaded it into my iMac. Aperture software stated that some of the images were unreadable or unidentified format. I think it was the movies I recorded. All other images was visible in aperture. I am using the PNY Professional 8GB disk.

I purchased the camera and the disk from Best Buy. I had already formatted the disk. I will try to add more videos and see what happens.

thanks for valuable tips, I found this thread since I had quite a similar problem, which is most probably resolved by now.

my situation:

had quite the same problem with my Kingston cards as was described. that is, I bought two brand-new kingston cards (16 gb and 64 gb) and formatted them in the d7000 camera. I expected them to work perfectly after that, since I disagree with the rumour that Nikon & Kingston is not a good choice (I have been using nikon d80 and a bunch (6) kingston cards for more than 5 years).

to my surprise, after making a bunch of photos (cca 80) on one and then the other card, an ERROR message appeared on the top display and camera refused to shut down. when trying to browse the images, it said that the card can not be used and should be replaced.

how I resolved it:

based on your tips, I formatted cards on a computer (took far longer time to process than on camera and I believe it made a difference) and then formatted it on the camera. until now, no problems with the cards.

I don't know NCIX, but from what I've read it's ebay and fly-by-night on-line retailers one needs to watch for. If brick-and-mortar stores are suspect we're all screwed. ;)

The problems reading RAWs was on my D7000, not my computer. While using both the Kingston and Patriot, I experienced this problem where the camera would sometimes "lag" while cycling between RAWs in camera. Then when I tried to turn it off or switch to the menu, the camera wouldn't respond.

I bought the cards at NCIX, which has more than a few locations in Vancouver and Ontario, Canada. They come across as reputable, but maybe these cheaper cards are counterfeit. Thanks for the tip Drab.

Did you buy the cards from a "reputable" retailer? The number of counterfeit flash cards is mind blowing.

Thanks for all the advice and responses everyone! It was reassuring to receive such a quick and helpful response from the community.

I managed to record 5 continuous minutes of 1080-24p video on my Kingston card, so since I was having trouble only viewing Raw photos I'm guessing that the Kingston is not the problem. I downloaded a program called "Chkflsh" for windows and I'm running some write/read tests on both cards now, hopefully that will give me some reassurance for keeping or returning any of the cards! I'll update as things progress...

For reference, here's the two cards in question:
- Kingston 32GB SDHC Class 10
- Patriot Signature LX Series 16GB SDHC Class 10

I've had bad experiences with Kingston, I wouldn't use them.

A card failed on me when I went on vacation.

I also just got an 16gb Patriot LX SD, works beautifully in the D7k. I have heard Kingston cards having problems with Nikons

I have two 16 GB class 10 SDHC from Patriot LX series (PSF16GSDHC10). I have done, without knowing it would help, a full format through a card reader with my computer, then an in camera format. I'm up to about 600 pictures and maybe 4 or 5 short trial video, and have had no issues yet.

Patriot is a "name brand", but esp. with SD cards I would only buy high-end.

I would also not use any card which gave you problems before doing a full format on your computer. The quick format on your computer or the quick format on your camera do not actually clear all the blocks, but rather mark them in the FAT.

Chkdsk or fsck.vfat should also be done on the card before trusting it again.

sorry for sad news.
I'm using SanDISK 8gb card in slot1... it was calucalated as "promo" so it costed 10e...
however i dont know which class, it says 15MB/s reading and 7MB/s writing.
Never expirienced troubles by now.
As lewinp i'd say that this is card issue too...
I'd go ahead to nearest computer shop and ask guys if you can test this card on their cameras or if you can test new cards on your camera. if they say yes, try it out... its worth of saying "please".

It sounds like a card issue - I have never heard of Patriot, but I can tell you there is absolutely a difference in the quality of cards and a reason the pro cards cost 2-3 times more. The reason your camera would not shut down is that it was busy thinking, trying to read the card.

One experiment might be to buy a small card from a better known brand like Sandisc or Lexan (you can get a 2GB card for under $10 these days)and see if the problem still happens.

I received my D7000 with the first batch of body-only shipments. I bought a 32GB Kingston Class 10 memory card to shoot on, and I could take photos fine until one time when I tried plugging the camera into my iMac. The camera files would not show up and the files were unreadable. I formatted the card and it seemed to be fine after that...

I then bought a 16GB class 10 patriot card and after shooting with both for a bit (dual slot set to backup onto 16GB), I couldn't view the photos on the camera! Pressing the playback button just displayed a "Unrecognizeable file" sign. Then the camera would lag and not respond to my pressing the shuttter button or cycling through photos. Trying to turn off the camera also did not work (ie. turning to the off switch did not shut down the camera, it still displayed camera settings on the top LCD).

I've also noticed that switching to Live view Mode takes about 2 seconds now, vs near instant.... Anyone experienced these problems? Seems like the camera is lagging or overloaded and can't process fast enough...
