I used captcha for a few years and it work fine. Then about two years ago the spammers got a robot that could read the captcha and overnight my 5 - 10 per day registrations swell to over 100 per day. 95% spammers. That's when I closed registration for a few weeks. I then added a script to ask a question of my choice. I just have to change the question monthly to keep the robots out. I'm down to one or two spammer posts per week to deal with out of 500-2000 post per week. The board size is just under 14,000 members and 800,000 posts since 1998. The board is for professional picture framers.

I also support the idea of not allowing new members to start topics. would certainly cut off some of the spammers.

@framer - knowing how many posts mods delete, I can assure Your that majority of them are as other suggested. though I also like the idea of adding captcha to registration form.

That would not work as a spammer can just post on any thread. They are sneaky some join and wait a few months before they post others try to post for real and sneak junk in.

+1 - I have seen this on many other boards. It also helps with limiting people wanting an answer to a question without bothering doing a search nor want to be a part of the board.

DutchNikon, that was something admin added to make a bit more money. I think he asked for feedback when he put it on and there were no loud boos and hisses. I used to embed links in my posts but since that change I just post the entire link to avoid confusion.

On the board I run spam got so bad I quit accepting new users for awhile. I then settled on a registration question a robot can't anwser and change the question monthly and this reduced spam by 95%. I now also personally review daily the email address of each new member and reject any that look like a future spammer. Overall enjoyment of running a board today is not what it was 10 years ago. I will not let the spammers win.

Yup, noticed that.... and this is up to someone other than me to worry about. I just watch for the big threads which are selling all sorts of stuff we do not want on NRF.

To me it looks like there is something running on this website that turns brandnames into links, so now the word N I K E in your post turned into a link witch shows "Link added by Viglink" when hoovering over it with the mouse pointer...

Edit : Even the word "v i g l i n k" turns into a link to viglinks website so this makes this terribly easy for spammers, since they dont even have to enter a url in their message, just the name of a product or companyname , cause this turns into a link automatically..

OK so the PM spamming seems to be limited. I suppose the spammers are only hitting people who are logged into the forum at the time. Not sure about the report button error though.

Just the once every couple of months "Great price on Nikon D700 body for $1000!" Just visit www. something and thats about all I've seen on here in the 2 plus years. Some people accidently post links I think, but I do remember seeing Korea Air post to promote their annual photo contest a few months ago too...

No PM spam here either. Any spammers out there beware, that wasn't a US special forces team that got Osama Bin Laden, that was Niko and the boys in retaliation for posting a link advertising a good hairdresser in Islamabad. :-)
