I have been getting several problems...never thought to have them sent to repair but wish I had because the warranty just ran out. Everyone told me my technique must be bad but then I tested a pro-quality 70-200 and images were not focused as they were in the viewfinder. 20 years of experience sports and other, and this is the results upon experimentation: Images are totally crisp, although rotated, when I put my old film lenses on the camera...however I must alter the focus slightly blurry to get them crisp in the recording. No matter which lens new or old, images are rotated slightly. I thought the distance to sensor had slightly wrong distance to sensor, which would make autofocus impossible and manual focus would require my compensating. Hard to explain to a client in the moment that I have to re-do shots! I didn't realize the gravity of the situation for a while. Now I'm finding other people having "alignment" issues...otherwise a great camera but needs repair to this quality control or design issue, or the garbage can. Honestly, I've been using this camera body for a year and I don't think it was ever accurate, now that I've been testing other brands & models to replace it with.

Yup. Same problem here. For a while I thought it was something I was doing when pressing the shutter button, but I've since tried with a remote and I'm absolutely positive the viewfinder is tilted on mine. My photos all come out needing to be rotated ~1-2 degrees counter clockwise.

HI, new here but long time photog and recently added Nikon gear to my kit.

I've been really enjoying the IQ of the low cost little D5100 I picked up last fall but the thing drives me nuts because the final image does not line up with the viewfinder.

If I set the left most and rightmost AF points in the viewfinder along a straight edge, that edge should be perfectly horizontal in the shot and also in live view.

I align my shot, then have to remember to rotate the camera body about 1 degree CW to get things level in the final file. Or slow down even more and use a tripod and live view.
I just find this very annoying! 1 degree off can be quite noticeable in some shots.
For reference, that means I have to adjust the tilt of the camera so the outermost AF points in the viewfinder are no longer exactly lined up with the reference line. The left AF point needs to be about half its height above the line, the rightmost AF point needs to be about half its height below the line, then I can get the reference line to be close enough to being aligned with the resulting image. That also equals about 3/8" over a 2 foot line.

Those of you using D5100s, have you noticed this same issue with your cameras? Of course, you may have to specifically check for it, then, upon discovering it, become similarly disappointed this otherwise great little tool may be slightly flawed. 8-\

Of about 15 SLRs I recently tested, mostly Canons and a couple Nikon models, only the D5100s, five of which I've tested, gave me results that were tilted up to 1 degree CW.
Of the five D5100s tested, one was nearly spot-on, one was off just a little, and the other 3 were off nearly 1 degree. All were rotated CW.

Considering that I'v also read of some people having AF issues with this camera, I'm wondering if there may be some slop in the mirror system or overall mirror-box component alignment that may be contributing to this.

I've taken close-up photos of the mirror box, mirror up and down, and tried to locate any misalignments using basic software tricks. Closest I'd found was the mirror frame, when it was up and therefore irrelevant, was tilted about half the angle of the experienced problem. It's really hard to tell if there's any tilt to it in the normal down position.

Your thoughts, commiserations and comments are requested. I'd like to get a feel for what proportion of D5100s may be affected before I consider sending mine in for a possible warranty fix.

Yes, you can do as Jyri suggests and use any film type screen protector from another device, and just cut it to size (the ones meant for sat nav's are usually only a bit too big), or do a search of the forum and you'll see we have discussed the various 'bespoke' options previously. For the record, I swear by Giotto's glass ones.

Those that have the d800, have you purchased an LCD protector similar to the shield? I rented a camera that had a really completely smooth protector. Didn't get the name. Any ideas?

I saw this "greenish" problem when previewing the NEF files on the computer screen... in the early days when I just got my D7000 and the tools (at that date) did not read correctly the encrypted WB settings of the photo. (Picasa, IrFanView, Gimp).. but later on, after updating these tools, the NEF files didn't show greenish.. but correct.

I also shot in RAW all the time.

The LCD screen on your camera does not support Adobe RGB. That is why the colors in your photos look different. Never use the camera's LCD screen to judge colors unless you know how to use your histograms.

That is also a good advice. Good to know that the LCD does not support Adobe RGB as well. Thanks Niko.

hi perminna, I've been experiencing the same problem on my D7000 that I purchased 2 months ago. Haven't done the firmware update but I will probably do that soon.

I take pictures on my D7000 and when I import them into lightroom 3, I can see that they have a greenish tint on all of them. It's really annoying. I always have to boost up the tint on the white balance option in LR3. Have you found a fix for it yet? I don't know what to do. But it's really slowing down my work flow.

The color space is irrelevant for you because you use raw and lightroom, so just switch to sRGB if that fixes the problem. Images are edited in LR using the monitor profile and only on export does it matter which space you choose.

Color space on the camera does affect the thumbnail jpeg (and joeys if not shooting raw), but I wouldn't use AdobeRGB even if I was a jpeg shooter because it's too wide a gamut for 8 bits, IMO. In raw it's immaterial which you choose.

My guess, without more info, would be Picture Control. This will effect your Jpegs, which, as stated, are what you see on the camera (even when you shoot RAW). I am not sure if you always see green, but if it is mainly an indoor problem, is it under florescent lights? If your picture control is set to vivid, you may be increasing the green of the florescent lights.

I know what you mean about the lightroom first loading with a different image, this is only noticeable on slower computers (such as the one I am typing this on, Duo Core, 2Gb Ram). If you shoot Jpeg, does it fix after loading, or does it remain green after loading? If it remains green, then it is your camera settings. I don't have a D7000, but with my cameras this is very adjustable. There is even the cyan-magenta adjustment table settings.

As suggested, go to a store and compare to other samples.

Just a quick update: it seems that (although I stated otherwise in the opening post) photos taken in sRGB color space look better (less green, more natural, similar to Lightroom view) on camera's screen than those taken in Adobe RGB mode. That's a shame because I'd like to shoot in Adobe RGB. Maybe I just need to get used to flat and greeny preview in camera. The sRGB photos look equal in both jpg and RAW format.

And as a side note: I have not touched the picture/color controls, the color mode is set "natural". White balance is on auto.

I will reset the camera soon but I doubt it'll help.

Could anyone (a D7000 owner) try how sRGB and Adobe RGB photos compare on their camera?

When the photos are imported into Lightroom, and until the software loads them properly, a similar greenish version of the photos are shown in Lightroom view too.

This anicdote points to something other than a defective screen. I vote for a picture control being out of whack. Don't picture controls affect the generation of a RAW file's embedded jpeg thumbnail?

Thanks guys. I will try resetting the camera and then installing the firmware update.

- I don't have protective film on the rear screen but the plastic cover is on.
- I have tried different white balance settings, it's the same.
- If I remember correctly, I have tried shooting jpg too, and the photos look equally green on the camera's screen. I don't have the camera within reach at the moment so cannot check.
- I shoot RAW and when I import the photos into Lightroom, they stay RAW (NEF), they are not converted into jpg automatically. LR thing is not important because the photos look okay on computer screen after Lightroom has computed the RAW files properly.

If I'm unable to solve the green tint by myself, I will contact the reseller and/or local warranty service representative.

That sounds like it could be something to do with jpeg format as that is what you are first looking at on the rear screen and what first loads on your computer screen? I'm assuming you are shooting in raw here. If that is true, then when you change to shooting jpegs it should stay green.

I'd go with the reset and try changing colour space to see if that affects it.

...Or you could upgrade to a D90...... ;^)
