Thanks for the insight. You may be right about their software. I'll use Image Capture instead, or continue removing the SD card and using the bult-in card reader on my Mac.

Several years ago I tried the Nikon software and found for a neophyte it was too confusing. As to why Nikon creates software... lots of answers, some of which are related to marketing and control of proprietary programs..

I am just sharing my experience, not that it is a "correct" or "better" way, just what works for me. And, something I do not like to admit... I may be an "old dog" who cannot learn new tricks....

An interesting question. However Nikon provide software for use when the camera is connected to the computer (Nikon Transfer 2 and ViewNX 2) and I'd expect it to work for their camera when connected to a variety of computer types. Otherwise, why bother creating the software?

I may be a bit slow...but is it not safer to connect a card reader and pull the card from the camera to transfer data, than to connect camera directly to the computer to transfer image files?

My experience is to do this primarily to avoid the issue of bumping the camera or straining the connection, or whatever. I will sometimes have more than one card to read as well. So, I guess I am asking how many connect camera directly and how many connect a card reader?

I run Mac OS 10.7.5 on a MacBookPro and actually connect the card reader, then move the files to another external hard drive, and import to LR 4.2 from the external hard drive. It all works well with an XQD card from my D4.

I have a new D800 with the latest firmware (A = 1.01 B=1.00) and a MBP with Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I have checked Nikon and Apple forums and updated ViewNX2 to 2.5.0 as suggested, but still I cannot see the photos on the camera when using Nikon Transfer2. It does recognise the camera, it just doesn't show the photos in the Thumbnails section.

In order to download the photos I've taken the SD card from the camera and put it in the MBP card slot.

I've checked using a Windows XP laptop and the camera is detected and recognised, showing the photos and the disk in Explorer. Why won't the MBP show the disk and the contents?

It's either an Apple issue or a Nikon issue.

It works with the latest update for LR4.

My bad. "Tether" means something else in my industry, not what Erika Barker is describing.

I'm going to look at this tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

So a clean user account was not the answer either. @adamz: really appreciate your feedback, but it sounds like you're doing an auto-import into LR rather than a direct tether. True, the difference is pretty minimal, but I'm specifically interested in tethering inside of LR.

Has anyone actually had success doing this? @Waturu, I originally read your post as if you were able to do this successfully, but perhaps I misread and you are talking about importing files rather than tethering.

I also came across this video on FStoppers yesterday which seems to indicate that it isn't possible, but I could swear I did it in 10.7. Maybe I am misremembering and actually used my 7000...

certainly its not an os problem, was shooting last friday (d800) from my mbp with 10.8 on it using the DSLR Camera Remote Server + iPad version of the DSLR Camera Remote and it was working (almost) like a charm - some small issues on the iPad, but the transfer was perfect.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake PB PM. I did indeed mean that I am running 10.8.0.

What is very strange is that I am able to do a tethered capture with the new version of Smart Shooter, which kind of rules out the damaged USB theory. I've tried all variations of startup combos (starting LR, then connecting USB; connecting USB but leaving camera off, then starting LR; camera connected and on then starting LR; etc), but no luck in getting LR to detect my camera for tethered capture. It also doesn't detect it for auto-import, but will recognize the camera if I manually choose to import inside LR.

Any other thoughts? What other info would be helpful here?

I'm going to try setting up a clean OS X user account to see if that yields any results. Other than that I can certainly try Adobe support, though that isn't always the most efficient solution.

Considering that 10.8.1 hasn't seeded to testers, I think you're running 10.8.0, unless you work for Apple, in which case you would have just violated your NDA.

I just tried it on my work computer, which is a '10 Macbook Pro, 8GB, running Mountain Lion, LR4, Capture NX2 and Nikon Transfer 2 (although I only ever use LR4).

No problems with seeing my D800 and transferring files. I would check your USB cable. These things can get damaged of they are bent more than the allowable bend radius. (it's happened to me). Other than that, there is not much information in your post to go on as far as troubleshooting. PM me if you want more help.

Interesting. I'm using LR4 on a 2011 MBP running 10.8.1 with 8gb ram. Same config that I used tethered with the D800 before Mountain Lion. Glad to hear it's working for you. Will try a few other things now.

Are you using the most recent D800 firmware?

The D800 tethered to LR4 works fine for me with mountain lion on a MacBook Air. I haven't tried on a MacBook pro yet. What else can ou tell us about your hardware and software?

Has anyone had any luck with tethered capture in Mountain Lion and the D800. Smart Shooter, Lightroom and Nikon Camera Control all stopped working for me with the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
