If it is not reading in the computer also I would maybe think about the card being faulty. I would try another and if the new one works fine send the bad one back to Sandisk for a replacement.

This happened with an offbrand card I had...I couldn't even recover anything from it because nothing would even recognize the card. I lost the pics...I sent the card back and got a replacement, but I haven't use that brand card again. Bought a Sandisk card and haven't had a problem since.

The easy answer to both of these is to reformat the card and try again. The harder answer is if you want to try and recover any of the data from the card before reformatting. SanDisk used to bundle a product called Rescue Pro. You can still download a demo version for free to see if you can recover before buying a license.

Honestly, some sort of data recovery software should be in every photog's bag. It's just as important as a sensor cleaner :-)

The reason I'm digging this thread up is that we should probably put together a sticky trouble shooting thread and put all of the first answers in there:

Did you reset your camera? Did you pull the battery? Try a different lens? Is the cap off? Etc... Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I just purchased a Nikon d5100 from Besy buy and along with it a new 16gb sandisck sdhc card. when I turned it on today..it said that there was no sd card installed..when in fact it was there... i had taken some photos and some videos..just trying to get the feel of the new camera..but i cant get any of them to pull up. I have been reading about this issue and my firmware is already up to date. Has anyone had this issue with up top date firmware? I will get e new card and try it..any reccomendations. The card is also not readable in my laptop either..it could be the card..but i could preview my pictures in the camera at one time..now it insists that there is no card installed.

stillriver said:
We bought a Nikon D5100 for a trip to Tanzania this past month. For the first several days, everything worked fine. My husband downloaded and cleared the 32G SD Card onto a MacAir computer each night. He was taking mostly still shots. On the day that we saw a leopard and a couple of Cheetahs, he switched to shoot video. The camera went blank after a minute and the hourglass displayed stating "can't read card data". He turned it off and on again but had the same issue. When we got back to the lodge, he inserted the data card into the computer and it didn't even register that the device was inserted! There was no icon on the desktop noting that the SD card was inserted. So--has anyone else had this problem? The camera is 3 weeks old. We are hoping against all odds that there may still be a way to capture the data on the card. BTW, we had another data data card we used for rest of trip with no problem but we never used video again. We're not sure if it was a card problem or switching to video or a lemon camera problem? Thanks for your help! Glad to have found this Forum.

I have just bought a D5100 and a Sandisk Extreme 16GB SDHC card. I put the card in, formatted it and then over the next couple of days I got a "NO SD CARD INSERTED" error. It is an intermittent fault - I would pull it out, put it back in and it would work for a couple of shot but them the error would return. I returned the card and swapped it for a new Sandisk Extreme 16GB SDHC card but the same issue is still happening.

Is there something I am missing or is there an issue with the D5100 and these cards?

I am about to update the firmware - a new release on the 10/11 - to see if this helps but any help would be appreciated.

I have been getting several problems...never thought to have them sent to repair but wish I had because the warranty just ran out. Everyone told me my technique must be bad but then I tested a pro-quality 70-200 and images were not focused as they were in the viewfinder. 20 years of experience sports and other, and this is the results upon experimentation: Images are totally crisp, although rotated, when I put my old film lenses on the camera...however I must alter the focus slightly blurry to get them crisp in the recording. No matter which lens new or old, images are rotated slightly. I thought the distance to sensor had slightly wrong distance to sensor, which would make autofocus impossible and manual focus would require my compensating. Hard to explain to a client in the moment that I have to re-do shots! I didn't realize the gravity of the situation for a while. Now I'm finding other people having "alignment" issues...otherwise a great camera but needs repair to this quality control or design issue, or the garbage can. Honestly, I've been using this camera body for a year and I don't think it was ever accurate, now that I've been testing other brands & models to replace it with.

Hi Jonnyapple,

Well, i'm gonna explain to you my case.
I buyed that lens, at first all was OK. I shot a couple of normal portraits, some people walking, and old bike... and all was really good. I only notice a little softness at 1.8, and a few cyan color fringes, but it is normal at these apertures.

The problem ocurred when I want to shot a headshot to my girlfriend. It was in a distance of 1.5meters. Of course I put the focus point in her eyes but when a look the pictures, she has the eyes and the eyebrows without focus, the focus was on her fringe of his front. So, I think "hey, 1.8 apertures are soo critical... but I hace a really good shooting tecnique".
That night, I check the lense with a focus chat making two test, one at 1m and other at 1.5m. Both of them shows 18mm of backfocus. Thanks the d7000 and his professional capabilities I used the focus microadjustement to put it to -18. Now the lens is PERFECT, I shot without tripod, at 1.8 to a 1meter subject and everything (I want) is on focus.
But the lens is new, that's why I am asking if it is normal or not, or if it will be worse in the future and the backfocus would get out of the -20 scale of microadjusting.

Thanks for the comments. It really helps.

pd: sorry for my grammar mistakes.

Yes, I was only saying that if he ever needed to sell it, it would be more difficult to because he'd probably need to disclose the focus issue to potential buyers. If you never see yourself selling it, then I wouldn't worry about it.

guirols, are you sure you wouldn't rather have a macro lens? 1m is about the minimum focal distance for that lens. Maybe you'd be better off with the 85 f/3.5 macro for DX? It also has VR and has a similar price.

Thank all for the responses.

In fact, I don't really care if I need to adjust it -18. I know that the problem could be in the AF motor of the d7000, or both lenses and camera. Maybe this lens in a d800 don't need microadjust.
The point is, is it going to be a -18 always? Could it be worse? If in the future the backfocus is going to bet stronger I will have a -20 top correction only.

Unless you're hard on your body and lenses and they get banged around a lot it probably wont change.

I still think -18 is enough to try to exchange it while you have the chance (especially if your other lenses don't need to be adjusted). If the new lens exhibits the same behavior then it's probably something that may be an odd combination with your body and that particular lens.

Hi,

I recently buyed a new Nikkor 85 1.8D lenses version because it seems to be the perfect portrait lenses for my d7000.
After using it for the first time I notice a little "softness", what a surprise when a check it in the laptop and I discover a focus problem.
After doing many test with a focus chart I found a heavy backfocus. Using the focus microadjusting tool I put it to a -18. Now the lenses are working really great, and I focus right in all the pictures.
But my questin... Is it normal to put -18 in a new lenses? Do I need to return it back to the store or it is a normal issue?

Please, help me, I'm on time for returning it.

Thx to all! :)

pd: sorry for my english, it's my fourth language.
