oops my bad, really bad example. My point being the quality build of Nikon grips are worth the money in my book.

The chief reason I bought the Nikon MD-10 is the quality beefy build of the tripod screw base. Think about the affects flexible build of image quality. very large and heavy lenses act as a lever on that one point. If you carry the whole tripod with out dismounting the camera/grip/lens it will test the value manufactured ones. Switch actuation ratings will also be way better on Nikon's unit.

It has better weather sealing, similar to how the D800 is better sealed than the D7000. I believe that is a major portion of the cost difference.

There already is, slap 8 AA batteries in the OEM grip... just like you can in the MB-D10.

Why can't they just make a grip that has the shutter release and control wheel on the other side... Then just shoot landscape like you would portrait only without a grip.

just counted the price of MB-D12 with d4 battery and charger and... it's almost $1000, that's a ridiculous price to pay for 2 fps. hopefully, there'll be some alternatives soon on alibaba :)

Price of the MB-D12 in Switzerland is 400$... Waiting for it to come down ! At 300$, I may bite.

You are correct, this is stated in the user manual for every Nikon camera I've ever owned. If Nikon can prove (good luck with that) that you used third party accessories, your warranty would be void. It's like dropping your camera one day and it effects nothing. Then six months later there is an electrical short due to manufacturing defect and you need it repaired. Just because the drop wasn't the cause, if Nikon see signs of a drop and thinks it is possibly the cause, you're still screwed.

I think they would need to demonstrate that the inferior part was the cause of any problem. Car makers operating in the UK used to insist on franchise servicing to maintain warranty, this is now illegal, all you need to demonstrate is that your local garage carried out service to the manufactures schedule and standard.

That said, yes, $500 sounds expensive for a grip, but I guess if you shoo a lot of portrait shots, it might make sense. If I've learned anything, its that you can't spend to much money on a device you use all-day every day. I've spent $100 just to get the perfect mouse for my work (company was to cheap to buy it for me). Makes a huge difference, and I no longer get blisters on my finger during budget season.

personally, I'm waiting for cheap alpha brand replacements. $500 is way to pricey for simple grip

Got the box last week during the middle of several shoots and wanted to see how the D800 performed in my studio using a 1980s vintage Chimera softbox, SB-900 and PocketWizard to trigger a full power dump.

I'm using my 1990s 85mm PC Micro-Nikkor lens which doesn't communicate well with any of my bodies--Even at f/2.8 it says it's f/51 and varies widely as I turn the aperture dial.

To tweak the tilt of the lens to cover the angle of the silver bucket, I'm using Liveview to zoom in to adjust the focus planes. So far, easier to use the LV than the D300s, D700 and the D3/D3s. A simple push of the button gets me in and out, thus the camera is

I'm using the D800 at 1.2x just to get me a little more room and running the lens about f/18 and ISO 400.

The camera has been set to my preferred settings including 12-bit, compressed raw, auto-balance, etc., similar to the rest of my bodies. Since the photos were also taken with my D3s, this was simply to see how the the D800 would work out in a similar situation. I have not looked at images from both the D3s and D800 side-by-side.

Looking at the embeded images in Photo Mechanic, I can see no issues due to focus and very little diffraction issues. They look sharp! Looking at the ACR 6.7 post-processed image at 100%, all 6144x4080 pixels, I see detail I can only view with a loupe!

First impressions is that with good lenses and good technique, this camera is a winner! Wish I could share the photo, but I don't like to show commissioned work until my client has had a chance to review and choose what he needs! You'll just need to trust me until I've had a chance to shoot my own work which happens when all the paying work is completed...

Yeah but no one seems to have it in stock. I've just managed to get a response from Nikon who say it will be 3 to 5 weeks before it's available.
