So was I. As soon as I heard canon scheduling a press conference for the same day! To me there seems to be a lot of politics going on behind the scenes at PMA. First canon, leica, and pentax say they will not be attending(pentax waited until the day before PMA started to say that) Then canon and now Nikon schedule press conferences on the day PMA closes. Sony might make an announcement that day too. So it might seem like the manufactures are giving PMA a big middle finger.

Or they might just want to make a big bang announcement to close the show. Still seems kinda strange that these conferences are all scheduled for the same day and with very little notice. Perhaps they just want to avoid leaking out details as has always been the case with previous announcements?

You know I was waiting for this.

Oh boy here we go again! Nikon has scheduled a press conference the same day PMA closes and the same day canon is rumored to be announcing "something". I don't remember so many "ackward" press conferences being held so suddenly like this before? Might just be nothing but then again...

We all ready got COOLPIX announcements this month RRRoger. The D700 will be updated this year at the latest by the end of summer. I think the D90 replacement will show up first. It's already being discounted pretty heavily and the D700 is being packaged with other gear, like a free SB900, in some places. That means Nikon is trying to clear out stock to make room for the new model.

The latest on this canon announcement is that it's going to be the 30 plus megapixel 1DsMk4. Very strange schedule since they could be using it at the Olympics. Why not announce it before the games start and then have photographers freely use preproduction models at the games?

That's tough to believe - the 16-35/4 and 24 1.4 (along with the 70-200 VR2) are all squarely aimed at the expanding FX base for Nikon; I suspect an update this summer/fall (if not sooner) for the D700. . . .the D4 will probably roll out 2011 Summer, but not the D700s (unless Nikon REALLY mucks up the release). . .

History tells us to expect nothing but more CoolPixs.

With a shortage of D3s and an overpriced Sony Sensor in the D3x.
I no longer have much hope for a D700s or x.

It is more likely that we will see a completely new camera, and probably not untill 2011.

Hopefully Nikon will take advantage of Canon not being at Pma, and introduce something good of a camera and not just a Grammy roadshow.

The D700 was announced in July of 2008. The first "real" leaks started coming out in early June. So the new D800/900 will probably follow the same route. The D90 came out in August of that year too but I don't think Nikon can afford to wait until the end of summer to replace it. Summer months are when people go on vacation and buy new cameras to take with them.

when was the D700 announced in 2008? Was it fall? I suspect we'll get a fall announcement for that. . .esp let the D3s shine at the Vancoucer games, etc. . .

I'll have to say Nikon's roll out, though sometimes confusing, is pretty spot on with timing and whetting the market. . .

A D7000 announcement would be great, the D90 was such an amazing hit and it's SO CHEAP right now (found it for $767 at abesofmaine.com), that one would be foolish NOT to get it if you are just getting into photography. . .

The replacement will reset it back up to $1100 range. . .

That's what's so interesting about this "surprise" announcement. It's only 4 days away and people are barely hearing about it.

It will be interesting to see what Canon releases. I think if Nikon was going to have a press event sometime in the next week or so we'd have heard about it by now.

DigitalRev (a "Hong Kong based online photographic equipment provider") have just been invited to "yet another canon product release on 23rd Feb." Could this mean Nikon will make an announcement next week or the week after too?!! Hmm very interesting.

Though in all honesty it seems this canon "surprise" announcement will either be the new 60D or some lenses. If it is the 60D I'd be hopeful Nikon could also unveil the D7000 (D90 replacement)? Not likely a D700 replacement.

what worries me is the increase in MP for an entry level in the 550D. I mean, it's got more than a D90, AND the D300. does this mean all the manufacturers would increase the MP's for their DSLRs'? or is it only happening in Canon since they're a big company? whatever it is, Nikon has to move fast!!

Ronin.1 the 1Dmk4 doesn't come near the D3S in AF or ISO. It has all ready been seen.

Nikon seems to be slower and slower at responding to market challenges. At the top end, for PJ/Sports work where high ISO performance and auto-focus are king and resolution needs are not as great their offerings are, for the moment anyway, more than competitive. It remains to be seen to what extent Canon have resolved their auto-focus and high ISO noise issues with the 1D MKIV and the yet-to-be-released 1Ds MKIV in the PJ/Sports market, but it seems that they are moving along at quite a clip in their other offerings and are bound to "get it right" sooner than later. If the expected to be released soon 60D lives up the the rumored specifications it could, potentially, take a lot of market share from Nikon.

I know I would find an 18 MP APS-C sensor with good performance up to ISO 3200 or even 6400 to be very tempting indeed. Especially if Nikon were to offer it.

I believe Nikon have got to work on shortening their product development cycle. Although this especially applies to camera bodies, it is also true of their lenses, many of which are in need of being updated. What may have been sufficient in the past will leave them in the dust of the competition in the future.
