Need to do some customization and get familiar with it, but feel free to start adding content. I have to start thinking on how to categorize the content. Please note also that I still do not have any backup procedures for that database.

Ok, give me some time to put a wiki online and then we can experiment. I don't even know where to start, but I will do some research. I guess we want to use the "original" wiki software and layout.

I agree heartyfisher. I think what is being described as a wiki is just a "links for beginners" section. Not really a true wiki.

Admin created the above link I posted as a place for such things. I think we should just post there as it was initially suggested by the admin 4 months ago.

Sorry guys ... but what do you mean by wiki here? (Define wiki) sounds like its some kind of database of links?
My understanding of a wiki is a community editable dynamic site.. which does not seem to be whats being discussed here .. ??

@Nikodoby, the aim of what we are doing is to actually save ourselves from the frustration of having to answer the same questions over and over again. Believe me, even the most helpful person will eventually get tired of it.

You want to know what a newbie would want ... I can tell you as it hasn't been even 2 years since I entered the world of DSLR photography. It is that someone would come and show you how things work or at least tell you where to look for information, especially good books. Well we can help with the last bit, for the first they'd have to find local courses.

Totally agree with you adamz. I would like to contribute too. I'm just saying we should ask him first to see how he wants to approach this before we cover the top of the threads with a bunch of stickys.

I wouldn't want him coming "home" to find his "house" painted a different color then when he left this morning :)

Niko - indeed it's admins place, but as You probably know this site is run on the "views" basis, and as a forum it needs people who read and people who write - and that's us, and IMHO section for beginners will only improve the "views" - and this could only benefit admin

So what we really want is a links section? A sticky were beginners can go and click links that takes them to whatever topic they have questions on, right?

I asked admin about a links section before... I think he was going to look into it but I don't remember where that went.

I can understand peoples frustration in having to answer the same questions over and over but I think if you don't want to contribute to a particular question then just don't acknowledge the thread and let someone else answer the question.

It's a big problem in other forums like dpreview. Beginners and newbies really get hung for asking "stupid" or "been covered before" questions. "Use the search you idiot... read the "F"ing manual... etc."

I don't wish for that kind of hostility to take over in this forum. Remember this isn't OUR house, it's admins and he can shut it down or charge us to use it if he ever wants to. That's actually already happened in other forums I use to visit!

I want to be part of a solution and this seems like a good start. Though I'd like to hear from a beginner or newbie and find out what exactly would help more?

@mb&NikoDoby, this thread is to bounce around ideas and sort out what we are going to put there. And I haven't done any work :D I'm urging all of you to do it :P

As there is no ONE TRUTH in photography, apart perhaps from the really beginners' stuff where you can also find contradicting statements.

What prompted me to this was the question about using the camera's buttons. As the forum and site grows, we will have more such people come here. Some will have done some research, some haven't.

There is always the possibility of actually contributing to Wikipedia.org if there is something missing.

niko - it's monty's idea, and You should thank him, as for this whole little project I think we can really make it working - and most of all save our time to answer questions like: "what camera should I buy" or "how to use this button"

Not sure that this will be any better than what's already out there. (like camerapedia.org) So maybe that's why admin didn't do this before.

This is hardly a wiki, without a search and wiki engine it is just a bunch of posts.

Wait what exactly are we putting in the wiki? Links to certain topics only? I was thinking we could just write up the info ourselves, but I'm sure some of us have lots to say so should there be some kind of limit? What do you think monty, adam, admin?
