I agree on the articulating screen; it's useful for stills, and pretty much vital if you're shooting video. As to the in-body stabilization, put yourself in the shoes of somebody who's shelled out serious cash on stabilized Nikkor glass (in some cases replacing similar, older, lenses because they lacked VR). Wouldn't you then be pissed if Nikon turned around and said, "Y'know what? Our bad. We're doing it onboard now."

I usually get slammed on here for trolling when I say anything bad about Nikon.

I will say that the D7000 is something that I am excited over. I was hoping for a D700 replacement or a EVIL, but in the mean time I believe I will buy the D7000.

Nikon did some very right things with this camera.

1) Support for manual focus Nikkors - huge for me, I have 55, 105 and 200 Micros plus some a 180 2.8 that would be very nice on this.

2) AF motor in the body - also huge for me I have 3 AF zooms with no motors that I like a lot and can use.

3) Build quality - probably up to Nikons excellent standards, no one builds a camera like them.

4) 16M pixels should be a good compromise in this size sensor for resolution and low light. I cant wait to see a decent test of this camera.

What they didn't do so right

1) No articulated screen

2) Image Stabilization in the body would be nice.

I will probably buy this until the D700's replacement is announced.

I must agree with those that feel Fuji stole the show with their exciting rangefinder
style offering and although no one has tried it out yet we should not be as dismissive as some have been on this forum. In the past ten years alongside my very heavy Nikon gear (2 bodies 3 lenses minimum plus batteries/flash etc I have always had a little Fuji something or other( currently an F30)stuffed away in the corner of my bag, and on quite a few occasions have needed to use them. I just never really took to Nikon P&S models and seem to have developed a soft spot for Fuji. Photokina just doesn't seem to have the same clout it used to have for major announcenents.

Personally, the most exciting announcement was the Panasonic GH2, but that's because I find myself becoming more and more video focussed these days :)

I would have loved to have heard news of a Nikon EVIL, or a D400/D800 though. This was the biggest disappointment for me. Especially after all of the Nikon Q news, which ironically was temporarily the most exciting news there was pre-Photokina, and it turned out to be a hoax :)

A lot of this, I think, comes down to timing and managing expectations. Look at Fuji, who nobody expected much from. They kept a tight lid on what they were doing, and pretty much stole the show (or at least its attendant press) with a product that was attractive, though really only innovative in one respect (that viewfinder).

On the other hand, I distinctly recall Nikon making noises about having something up their sleeve for Photokina that would be what a lot of photographers were looking for; you also have had a lot of leaks lately about their EVIL camera. All of their products, though, were leaked well in advance, and unveiled far enough in advance that the press had already largely done as much as they could with them under the circumstances.

Had Nikon kept a tight lid on the D7000 (it's not like they would've _needed_ to leak anything to keep anticipation high) and instead unveiled it at Photokina, it would have been the scene stealer that, instead, the X100 was. And yeah, I know, a few people talked about Sigma for about five minutes... then someone probably sat them down and explained the Foveon sensor to them, and they promptly decided that they weren't falling for a 45mp banana in their tailpipe. :P

The most interesting announcements of most shows is generally the accessories, especially from smaller companies.

Folks like Manfrotto, lowepro, etc all had really cool new stuff and i've seen plenty of obscure companies with interesting products.

Photokina was rather boring, nothing really new was introduced. Some people are wowing over the Fuji, saying how new and wonderful it is. It is a nice looking camera, but a new idea, far from it. Fuji just took the idea of the Sigma DP1 and made it look and act like a rangefinder. The new viewfinder technology is interesting, but that is about it.

Nikon had the best traditional cameras without a doubt, with Canon's offerings in the DSLR range being somewhat disappointing to some of the advanced amateur crowd. We saw a mirrorless camera update from Panasonic, yawn. One camera that might be interesting is the Olympus concept, if it performs well, and is cheap enough, then cameras like it might replace the market space of premium compacts like Canon G12, LX-5 and P7000.

As for the new Sigma DSLR, just another camera that might make it to the market in the next year, or two. It is a marketing departments glorified 15MP camera at best, I suspect you'd be better off with a D3100.

Guys this thread is suppose to be about Photokina not about focusing screens. As I have explained several times these last few weeks in Private Messaging to some of you, we need to keep the discussion as close to the original topic. If someone where to do a search for Photokina 2010 they'd get this thread but then read through it and discover it's a discussion on focusing screens. Or someone looking for info on focusing screens wont find this discussion because it's within a Photokina thread.

If you guys want to discuss other things that might come up in a particular thread please use PM. We've been seeing too many threads getting hijacked recently. I don't mind one or two off-topic remarks but when several people start chiming in it turns into another discussion. So please let's keep on-topic.

I know :) As soon as I figure out what my dslr situation is going to be (buying the bronica set me back a little bit, hah, given that I am jobless) I am definitely going to look into getting one of these. I remember finding out about these and then this lightbulb going on above my head and thinking..."OH so that is why focusing on a dslr sucks so much"

a 600 2.8 would be interesting. Id love to see some crazy lenses from nikon in the next few years, Maybe vr to some like the 24-70 2.8 but making some 1400 5.6 or somthing out of the lines like that. or a 50 1.2 noct.

I wouldn't mind if Nikon decided to make a few metal primes, pancake or not, with updated nanocoating, metal contacts for metering, distance scales, and all that stuff- think about it, if you ditch the autofocus motor, you save money!

No surprises at Photokina this year. Well at least not from Nikon. It was hoped we would get a glimpse at Nikon's EVIL "concept" camera but that never happened. Despite the interest of the D7000 and the D3100, I think the show was "stolen" by Fuji with their X100 prototype and by Sigma with their 46mp SD1. Other than that, this year's Photokina was very uneventful just like PMA back in February.

For a show that only happens every two years i would have expected more exciting developments. What do you guys think?
