Glad to be reading all the content with the D600. Had Nikon shipped that camera before the D800 I would most likely have gone with it as a logical progression from my D7000. Since I have the D800 now though I will be running it as my main body for a very very long time since it is such a wonderful camera or at least my copy is. I have messed around with a few D600's at a few stores and from what I have seen it is a very very solid camera and very respectable. All those that have it enjoy and share the knowledge that you have experienced shooting with the body.

I am new to Nikon I have been an enthusiastic Photographer for 30 years or more, I love landscape photography and candid photography, just catching the moment and I am not too keen on flash photography.
I am very very pleased with my D 600 I started out with Minolta I really the liked the qualities of their lens, so progressed to a Sony A 700 with a CZ 16 85 which I really enjoyed.
The A 700 was coming to the end of life, so I changed to the A 77 I have never had so many spoiled photos, missed focus, lots of noise and more. With careful consideration I sold all my Sony kit and got the D 600 with the 24 – 85 kit lens which I am finding pretty good when stopped down, I also purchased a 50 1.8 and an 85 1.8 fantastic lenses.
It took me a little while to get used to the menu system and the where about of things, but now I am familiar with I love it. I have renewed confidence I can go out and just take pictures knowing the camera will do its stuff and the rest is down to me.
It is not too big and heavy I do some trekking hills and mountains and other walking and just hang it around my neck with no need to take it off for a rest.
I could go on an and on about its qualities, the picture quality is to me amazing, I always shoot raw mainly aperture priority and the detail it captures especially shadow detail is very impressive, I just love it.
I am also pleased I don’t have the dust problem I have carefully examined photos for dust, speck and blotches nut can’t see anything and I have had them with the Sony cameras as to be expected, but they have always cleaned.
Reading about some of the problems some are having with dust and specks, which I now understand is becoming less of a problem as the camera is used, it would not put me of buying the D 600

Maybe, I don't think exotic glass would make much difference to me. I enjoy using different bodies more than I would enjoy using exotic glass. I hardly ever shoot at f2 and lower. If I did want to I can use my 50mm f1.4, or my 35mm f1.8 or my 85mm f1.8 or my 105mm f2 DC or my 135mm f2 DC. But have not been shooting portraits lately. I don't like too shallow a depth of field because to me the bokeh is not worth the lack of DOF on the primary subject if often costs.

Sometimes you keep things because you enjoy and value them, not because you really need them or use them to their full capabilities. I have a 12 year old Porsche 911 which I love to drive but I have to drive it about 20mph over the speed limit around here to even start to enjoy what it can do. That can get risky as to losing your license because the more you do it the greater the chance of getting caught. I will never get near driving it at 90% of what it can do. Top speed is 177mph but the highest I have taken it is 130mph. But I will keep it and enjoy it even though I could drive just as well with less of a car. I also have a 21 year old Mazda Miata I keep and enjoy driving at about 10mph over the speed limit where the Porsche is still too much held back from it's potential. The Miata has a lower maximum potential so you can enjoy approaching its limits at safer speeds. Those two cars have very different characteristics but both are very enjoyable to drive. And then I have an old Ford van I keep just because it can haul things which cannot fit into the Porsche and Miata. It is interesting to me to switch between different cars with different responses just as it is interesting to me to switch between different Nikon bodies with different characteristics. But my need to get from point A to point B could be served with one vehicle just as my photographic needs could be served by one "high end" DX body or by one "low end" FX body and I could sell about two thirds of my lenses. To each his own. Other than feeling the size of the body is too small for a person's particular hands, I find it hard to believe any more than 10% of Nikon DSLR users would find the 24mp DX 600 sensor and body "inadequate" for their use. To me the D4 and D800 are specialists cameras which offer speed, durability and resolution few people need.

You'd be better off selling off most of your cameras and using the money to buy some exotic glass. Considering that you clearly don't care that much for your D800 and seem very content with your D600, it seems terribly unusual to keep the D800 when it sees little to no use and you admit yourself that your needs are drastically exceeded by the camera.

I'm completely satisfied. I agree with aslightdelay about the color palette being a little bit different. It seems to have the same slightly green tint that people complain about on the D800 but it's an easy fix in post.

As far as handling, as long as you can deal with the AF point coverage being small, you wont have a complaint coming from the 7000. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and happy shooting!

In a word: Yes.

In terms of ergonomics, you'll notice very little difference between the 7000 and the 600. In terms of performance... maybe it's just me, but I find that the color palette on the 600's a tad different -- maybe a little warmer -- on the 600 than it was on my 7000 (and with the exception of the 18-105, I'm using the same exact lenses on one that I'd used on the other, so it's not that). It's taken some getting used to not having the built-in crop, but I'm not a big wildlife shooter, so that hasn't been a big deal. I've had the same issue with dust spots that everyone else seems to be having, but aside from that, I'm quite happy with it.

A lot of people come to the forums to complain or figure out solutions to their problems. Not saying that is a horrible thing but I want to know who is happy with their D600 purchase, and why.

I just sold a d7k for the D600 and it will be coming in tomorrow. Pretty pumped about it actually and just talked to B&H to receive my $100 instant rebate since I ordered it last week.

Lol, I don't know if that first remark was aimed at me, and my post above, but for the record, in spite of understanding completely the need to stop threads being endlessly repeated (as would happen if you and the other mods didn't do the great job you do), I do share some iris chrome's views ;-) You have to admit his last observation was hilarious. With regards to your second comment, I would say that's the answer to "how many does one want?". The answer to "how many does one NEED?" is invariably "one LESS than one has".

Lenses i have right now for my D800 AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED,AF-S DX NIKKOR
18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II,AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D and AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED.
So i have learned sell the DX lenses (then i don't have to stay in the lines of the box like a coloring book thru the view finder)and save to get a AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED and AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II.

• Each camera has an "issues" thread where all problems and issues of that camera go in that thread except D4 and D800... their "issues" go together.
• Any new D800/D4 thread pertaining to a specific issue runs the risk of being closed at random.

Welcome.....and one of the moderators is old as dirt I am told....ha, ha, ha.....

I am wondering what lens you are using on the D800.... and when you said "big jump" I was thinking "quantum leap" from D80 to D800. Just as a suggestion, if I had a new D800 and wanted a single zoom... 24-120mm f/4VR Nikkor. Or for two primes...28mm f/1.8G and 85mm f/1.8G (Possibly the 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR). These will most likely perform well on the D800, however the 28mm has not been fully tested yet.

Now, back to why I am on this thread.....

Shooting with an older 50mm f/1.4D Nikkor, from about 10 years ago, made in China, I found it had what I thought was more flare and slightly less contrast than some of the newer lenses I have. So, what I have learned is that I obviously need a couple new lenses, and will sell the D90, 50mm f/1.4, 20mm f/2.8, and 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 from the 1990's. So, a 28mm f/1.8 or D400, or Fuji...
....yeah, the rationalizations we use for new equipment is very well developed......becomes more acute after retirement....

I'm new to the forum and have been reading all the posts. Ton's of good stuff and I'll try to remember what i read (I'm getting old Just retired 6 weeks ago). You all have giving so much information that it is almost overwhelming and I want to thank you all. THANKS. I just made a big jump from a D80 to a D800 and love it. It is very hard to afford this high priced equipment. (TIP: When I go off for the weekend with the wife. She sends me to the bank for cash. She is at work hee hee. Anything I buy on the trip I use the ATM card and when I get home stash the cash. Before you no it, new body, lens or memory card). Good luck. Still learning. I hope soon I'll have something good to contribute.

Well... now I have learned on this forum that I'm not the only one who randomly shoots while driving. Haven't done it in a long time though. Shutter priority for sure.

One thing I like to do is at a stop light I wait until the light is about to turn green, and pull the camera up over left shoulder and snap a few shots out the driver side window. (cell phone or DSLR)

Here's a cell phone one I took last year. It's a guy holding a sign, in front of the same sign for the same business. It took me a few moments at the light before I realized it was even a person holding it. He's like a statue.

I guess he's supposed to spin it, but he remains perfectly still, all day long. (I drove by a few times)

I shot a ton of this kinda thing a couple years ago, I'll need to look for more of them.
