The Pani GF-1 is practically a first of it's kind, however it is a great first. If I was a camera nut with a lot of money, then I would get one. But since I'm a camera nut with not very much money I will have to pass.

These mirror-less interchangeable lens camera's are an awesome concept, and each year they will only get better.

What the hell do you mean lucked out? Nikon never said they'd stop making film cameras, and that's what I'm assuming too. I'm looking forward for a F7 with 51 point autofocus points!

That means I can pick up a F6 for cheap!

Yes, that one of my big questions!

Nikon lucked out with the F's, as they died out at the F6.

It looks like somebody's going to have to come up with technology better than digital, as otherwise Nikon's screwed!

That's the advantage of the Canon naming system, though it will eventually get annoying: 5D Mark MMMMCMXCIX

Future in my opinion does not belong to SLR, as the technology evolves I am sure they will be replaced with cameras similar to Panasonic GF1.
They will probably have electronic viewfinders along with live–view and with highly sensitive sensors and high resolution LCD screens you will be able to see better even at almost complete darkness.
Without moving parts, especially heavy mirror, you will have no vibrations, fewer mechanical malfunctions, lower weight, faster FPS and closer lens to sensor distance which means less retro–focus problems such as distortion and better IQ with wide lenses.

Having enjoyed shooting the Contax G2 rangefinder, I prefer them to SLRs for everything except macro/copy and long lens photography. But, that's predicated on a bright rangefinder, not some evil thing on the back of the camera. The advantages of a rangefinder were 1) bright finder with frame lines (you see around the scene and stay in touch - no mirror black-out) 2) because there is no mirror, lenses can be designed differently for improved performance at smaller sizes 3) smaller body, less obtrusive, quieter (no mirror) and lighter. Putting SLR lenses on a rangefinder doesn't make sense to me, nor do cameras without optical viewfinders. I would love an M-9 or a digital G2 (I don't hold out hope for either).

If I had gotten into rangefinders before I owned a decent film SLR I might have loved them, but as it is now I can't imagine switching.

Nikon F80 + 35 f2 is small enough for me, clearly not a pocket camera but I don't wear baggy enough jeans to pocket a rangefinder either.

If Nikon came out with a rangefinder now I don't know why I would buy it. Until there is a revolution in sensor tech my wife and I are happy enough with her Canon P&S, and I don't need yet another camera. (and don't mention F-mount lenses - I'll bet all takers $100 there will not be a F-mount rangefinder) (email @ soapssuckerbet@cleansoap.org if you want to participate in the bet)

DpReview was sure smitten with the new Panasonic GF1, special when used with the 20mm pancake lens.

What is your thoughts about a camera like this one and would you use it with a 20mm lens(app 28mm DX, 40mm FX)

And would you like to see Nikon make one, if so should it be micro4/3 or micro APS-C format

I'd like to see Nikon do something here, but I'm not sure that brand matters for me with a 4/3 camera. Of course it would be nice to have a tiny camera that was compatible with all my lenses, but its not like I'm going to take it out with a 70-200 attached. The reason to have one of these cameras is for its size. So I'll probably have a pancake lens attached 95% of the time.

I'm curious to find out if there is any shutter lag with these cameras. That's my main gripe about my Point and shoot. Low light performance would be nice, but I'm happy to use my D40 w\ my 35mm for that sort of stuff. Its still a fairly small combo.

You had a Nikon rangefinder? I'm intrigued by it. I want to own one too.

The Cosina is a good compromise, but why use a Nikkor lens on anything other than a Nikon body? The only thing that it'll possibly be useful would be if you happen to inherit a large batch of good Nikon glass and happen to not have a camera body to put them on. Other than that, it'll be a massive lens on a small body. Poorly balanced, and most likely still a large package.

To be honest, all the cameras there are not interesting to me. The EP-1 didn't turn out the way I wanted it to be, the EP-2, Samsung NX, and GF1 aren't out yet, and the G1/GH1 are still too large to be considered by me. I mean, the D40 with the 35mm 1.8 is only slightly larger than the Nikon P8000 point and shoot. It is of course much heavier, but the D40 is light enough as it is. I would gladly give up the zoom for wonderful low light characteristics.

And of course, the Leica M9 is WAY too expensive. Wait till you see the cost of the Leica S2, the medium format DSLR.

And because of that, I'd rather get a full point and shoot than what I consider to be a half assed DSLR wannabe. I don't have the money for it of course, so my perfectly functional Coolpix 3700 will continue to be my point and shoot.

And of course, you are entitled to your opinion. :D
