DIYPhotoBits is both free and saves the pictures in standard Nikon numbering on both the camera and the computer. It has its quirks, mainly get the program up cleanly before turning the camera on, doesn't have all the features of the other programs, but it does transfer pictures from the camera to the computer for immediate viewing, which is what I use it for.

Sevencrossing - I bought a USB extender and talked to the controlmynikon author, he said any of the amplifiers will work and several extensions can be strung together for his product. At my job we even use a USB to Cat5 to USB system for running that signal a very long way.

Has any one found a way around the max 5 meter, usb limit

There a a number of usb to cat5 extenders that will do this for about $30. Just google usb to cat 5 extenders

Should have mentioned that I use a D300s. Nikontrol seems to be for D3000. Guess I will give ControlMyNikon a try since 3.x is in beta and for $10.00 and no mention by anyone that it will trash the camera firmware or computer will give it a try over the next month and report back. Thanks everyone, if I get the contract I am hoping for this summer I'll have the $$ to pay off the credit card and think seriously about the Nikon product AND a D4. :-)

Cheers!

I have tried Control My Nikon and it works but I don't like the way it was set up. The pictures taken was not saved on the camera chip, but were saved on the computer only with a different number that the standard Nikon sequence. Don't know if that could be changed but I went back to DIY Photobytes program.

Anyone used ControlMyNikon yet? Could not find anything with forum search. Curious, price seems like a can't go wrong scenario. Wrote to an author whom I respect who was not impressed by ANY third party remote software that uses the Nikon API.
