Thanks,NSXType-R. I had to fly to Denver for the delivery so not having to haul my big cameras was so nice, plus I didn't have to worry about the TSA agents missing with my good equipment at the airports.

OUCH.....that hurts! lol

I bought it at our local camera store. The reason I didn't order it was one of my daughters was getting ready to have a baby and I didn't have the time to wait. But as it goes it was a false labor and had the baby last weekend.

All three of these shots were taken with my Canon S95, really good quality. I'm pretty sure the flash didn't fire, incredible for a point and shoot. And that boy weighed in at 9lbs 9ozs, big'in! :)

Sorry for dragging up the price lol.

But buying a camera early like that an understandable circumstance.

Congrats grandpa!

It'd be odd dragging all your Nikon equipment in the hospital.

I'd go M4/3 as well. Wait, I did. In addition to my Nikon D5100, we wanted something smaller, but with DSLR like features/quality and for the money, we went with the Panasonic GF3. The kit lens is nice at 14 - 42 (28 - 84 in 35mm) and we've also added the 45-300. There are great deals on this combo, putting it in similar range of P&S cameras, but with more versatility, and a larger sensor (better low light performance. There are way more lenses available since any of the Panasonic or Olympus lenses will fit.

Here's my pick for previous year's-

Canon S95.

Why? It's not a big difference from the S100. For the most part it's still in stock and it's a small camera. If you don't care about video, then go right ahead, you're not missing too much by getting the S95.

I've seen it for around $300.

m4/3 or ILC: Sony NEX-5N
Why: 1080p24 video at 24Mbps, 1080p60 video at 28Mbps, touch screen interface makes it even better than the NEX-5 for manual focus with Nikon lenses on an adapter, APS D7000-like sensor, my wife will use it in auto mode (even my three-year-old can use it)
Price: $700 with 18-55 kit lens

I just had THAT "What do you recommend?" email... NOT from my wife either!!!!

I suggested either the Sony NEX if the modern look was desired or the Fuji X100 if she wanted something more retro...

Sorry to go with another Fuji, but I am a fan since my S5200.

Super zoom (Lg body): Fuji FinePix SH20EXR/HS22EXR
= Why: 16MP, manual dSLR like zoom, RAW, 1080p video, 30x zoom. Overall the most dSLR like camera I have seen with a fixed lens. Price is pretty nice for the features and compared to similar cameras. Reviews note some performance issues, but it is still a P&S in the end.
= Price: Retail $600, Amazon $339

You guys kill me. One follows the format (Thank you Tcole), one just gives a color, another says a film camera that hasn't been made in almost 40 years that no one can buy, and then there's kanuck... ok close enough. Geeesh!

I'm sure I'm not the only photo-nut that is getting emails of "what camera should I get" and honestly I do not keep up with the compact, super zoom type of cameras at all.

What I'm looking for:
Anything one can purchase in the store today
Good for... General/zoom/IS/low light/ great flash/small/cheap/5-year life...I think you guys get the idea.

So Fire away!

(Type of Camera): Note above list.

Cheap: Olympus RC35
= Why: I love the junk results I get with expired film on this camera. It has inspired me to do an art project or two using this ancient stuff.
= Price: $0. Yup... It was FREE from a friend who was clearing out for a garage sale.

Who needs an expensive Holga to do Lomography? It's all in the film :-)

It is a shutter priority or manual only 35mm RF camera with no other automation. Lens is tack sharp everywhere except right up in the corners (and the back sticks sometimes when I try to open it to change rolls of film).
