In short no.

Longer...it will help some, but it isn't the answer. The only way is either get more light (ie flash) or up the ISO. The faster aperture won't make enough difference to get shutter speeds high enough to stop action. The vibration control really has nothing to do with it. It will help if things aren't moving, but blurry images for moving things is caused by slow shutter speeds. To stop motion a faster lens and upping the ISO are the only options without using a flash.

Edit: to clarify more. VR or whatever vibration control only compensates for your moving of the camera. IE you can shoot slower shutter speeds and the VR will compensate for movement of the camera...and they usually claim 2-4 stops better performance. So you could shoot 1/10 seconds hand holding with VR and without 1/25 might be the best you can get a clean image.

The VR works exceptionally well when things aren't moving. However if stuff is moving it is somewhat worthless. Moving objects require fast shutter speeds...so even if you have VR the lower shutter speeds like 1/10 isn't going to stop the action and the objects that are moving will still blur. The only way to fix this is to get more light, up the ISO, and/or get a faster lens. A F2.8 lens is usually only a stop or two faster than a variable aperture lens though and depending on how low the light is might not make that much of a difference. It might get your from 1/10 sec shutter speed to 1/25, but you really need like 1/200 or faster...so then you have to up the ISO anyway.

I have a Nikon D5000 body and I am looking into buying the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro SP AF for use with capturing low-light events indoors. I am worried about my images becoming blurry because this lens does not have Vibration Control. Will the large constant aperture aid in supressing this, especially at 200mm? Your thoughts and experiences with this lens is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance! :)

Both are good but only the 35mm f/1.8G will Auto Focus with your camera. You need to use "G" lenses. You could use the 50mm f/1.8G though.

Crop factor is 1.5 x the focal length.

Check out articles on the web for beginning photography for some of your questions. Pop Photo has a lot of good articles for beginners. Your questions are more in depth then we usually get here and that and other sites will be able to give you tons of info.

I am a novice in photography and I currently own a Nikon D5000 with its 18-55mm kit and a 55-200mm zoom as part of the package I bought. I am currently planning on buying a prime lens for my DSLR. Is the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G recommended? How about the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D?

I am also very confused with the topic of crop factor regarding my D5000 and these lenses. Is it true that the 35mm becomes 52mm and the 50mm becomes 75mm because of the crop factor?

Buying a prime lens is really making it very difficult and confusing for me. I hope someone can clarify things for me. I am also in a very tight budget and these are the only lenses I can afford.

Thanks!

Even though I love the 18-105, I don't think it's worth double the 18-55. Maybe the 55-200 vr is the way to go. As to landscapes, you can take multiple images that overlap and stitch them together with a panorama stitching program like hugin (it's free). It will automatically align them for you.
Edit: here's another thread that talks about hugin. http://nikonrumors.com/forum/topic.php?id=733

Hi guys I am also new to D 5000 bought recently. I was off to Himachal on a holiday with family and had a great time clicking away however with the 18-55 lens that came as a package, I found two limitations: I could not zoom a distant object very easily and also the wide and beautiful landscapes of Himalaya ranges could be captured only to some limited width... please suggest which other lens should I add?

I am thinking of NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED VR which is coming for RS 10000-12000 that is roughly my budget.

I also have an offer to exchange my 18-55 lens with a 18-105 lens and the shopkeeper will buy it back for Rs. 5000 and will give me the 18-105 for about Rs. 12000 ( I hope I remember the deal correctly)

Please help

Jaytron said:
Eh, from what I've read on other forums, the 18-200 isn't too great. I know a few personal friends that didn't keep theirs for more than a few weeks.

Thom Hogan's site has a pretty good comparison for the consumer zooms.

I have the lens and it isn't that it is bad. It has a very usable zoom range and it is built better then most of the other kit lenses, but the pictures don't seem to be as sharp as I hoped. It is a competent lens though and I wouldn't rule it out. I love having one lens that covers most of the range you want to shoot except for super telephoto. I would get annoyed with just having the 18-55 or even 18-105 personally. It is also the most expensive "kit" range lens I think. If you add a couple steps to the f-stop it seems to work pretty well.

This one from today with the 18-200 at f9.0 and 170 mm

I agree with jonny, 18-105 is at least 100€ better.
As for memory cards on D5000 faster cards only makes sense for video.
Do not count on D90 replacement any time soon, and Nikon does not lover the prices immediately after replacement is announced.

I don't have either lenses but i have played with them. i prefer the 18-105 just feels better built and the range is sweet. I have the 18-200 and its a great lens for walk about and for my preferred FOV. i also have the 18-70 and its a lovely lens but it does not have VR. The 16-85 is great as well. But for your budget I would say get the 18-105. and the D5000.

I have a D90 and the 18-55 lens. I use this lens ALOT. I photograph mostly people, especially kids. It is the cheapest lens I own, and one of my favorites. It is super sharp and focuses closely. The zoom range is great for me, especially considering that when used on a DX camera it gives the same angle-of-view as a 28-85mm lens gives on a 35mm film or FX digital camera. I prefer it to my much more expensive 18-200. In fact, the only time I don't use the 18-55 is if I switch to a fast prime lens for low light (check out the DX 35mm f1.8). I don't have personal experience with the 18-105, but generally the 18-55 seems to have better reviews if you look on Adorama or Ken Rockwell's website. I do generally think you should spend your money on better lenses rather than on a more expensive camera body. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Latko.

The D90 will be replaced soon but I don't think the price of a new D90 will come down more than it already has. It's more likely that when the replacement model (D7000?) is announced or released the D90 will become harder to find as it starts to disappear from stores.

The D5000 is a good camera and I think the zoom range of the 18-105 is better than the 18-55. The 18-55 zoom range is often too short. Especially if you are use to a point and shoot camera's big zoom.

I would go for the faster memory card too.

Hi to everyone.
I am new in DSLR world and I need help:) I want to buy dslr and I was thinking about D5000 with 18-105mm lens,it costs about ~760 euro (with regular 18-55mm lens is ~660 euros).
The question is does it worth extra 100 euro for this lens?
My other option was D90 but it is too expensive for me (~980 euro) and I was considering option to buy it with 18-55/3,5-5,6 VR lens (~890 euro), that is also above my budget but I can stretch to that price I think.
What can you suggest to me, should I wait for some time because I “hear” some rumors that successor to D90 will be released soon so the price of D90 will drop?
Also one question regarding memory cards speed: Is 8 GB, 9MB/s write and 15MB/s read speeds enough, or should I go with 20MB/s read and write speed(first one is 30 and second one is 50 euro)
Big thanks in advance.

I agree, and for 650$ D5000/18-55 kit this lens comes for free. For babies and portraits in general you will not be able to use any larger aperture then 5.6 anyway because DOF will be very shallow.
If you decide to go closer to that pretty face or if you do appreciate Macro feature 85mm VR micro for 550$ is probably the best DX choice.
