Might be the popup flash mechanism. My D800e (along with all others I have seen) make a rattle when the flash is closed, as the flash retention arms are not under pressure. If you pop up the flash, the rattle goes away since the arms come under spring pressure. . Completely normal.

I just did this with my D90 which has a lot of use. Sounds like a huge piece is loose inside. But, the fact is many of these cameras and lenses have parts which move and if jolted will make sounds. If the camera works, I certainly would not send it to Nikon and spend a service charge..maybe $75-$100 to find out nothing is wrong. I think if one sends in a camera even under warranty and no problem exists, there will be a charge. But, I cannot say for certain what any one service center will do.

Shoot images, let us see what you do... post on PAD

Hi jtcaraig, welcome to the NR forum.

I have to ask you - have you noticed anything wrong with the function of the camera or any problems with the images that the camera takes, and do you have any previous experience with DSLR's of the D7000's complexity? I'm just trying to get a feel for the detail behind Newbie with that last question.

Hi. I am a newbie. I am also having exactly the same problem. And I also did what he did actually. My question is: Is the 'mirror flapping' normal? Shall I bring my D7000 to service center?

I own the 600mm f/4 and would not trade it for anything the world. It is RAZOR sharp (sorry but I disagree with Thom Hogan) and the AF is amazing. Is shoot everything from birds to Thoroughbred racing with it. I have used the 200-400 extensively and love the lens but as others have said it is a totally different lens. It is very nice for shooting large animals where you can get close...but I usually wish for more lens, not less. I am considering getting one to compliment the 600 as others have done.

I find a way to make my 600mm work for most of the things I do. For me, the reach is appreciated over the 400mm and I just do not believe the extender gives you the quality of the lens only. Since most of what I need is long...the 600 is a no brainer for me.

As others have stated, you might consider the 500mm if you are considering the 200-400. The weight savings is substantial. The 600mm (and 400) is a beast and requires some extra planning when traveling.

One last consideration, if you buy the 600mm or 400mm, renting the 200-400mm is way cheaper.

I own both the 200-400 and 600mmm vr lenses and they are quite different. If i am going out to shoot birds I take the 600 and it is most often too short. When I am traveling by airplane I only take the 200-400mm and do not shoot birds because it fits into a checked bag and still leaves room for clothing. The 600mm even in its own smalller bag will not fit in a carry on anything. I shoot a D3X and print many 24X36 images and I try to not use any tela-converters because of the degrading of the image. The 200-400 is too short for morst birding situations but works on larger animals and long senics very nicely. I had the 500mm F4 and bought the 200-400 and I found that i was not using the 500mm because there was not enough differance. Then I traded fort the 600mm F4 VR and I now use both. If you can only get one The 500mm VR would be my choice and I have owned all three. The VR does make a difference.

Forget the 200-400mm, it´s not even near the quality of either the 400mm or the 600mm.

If you want a lighter lens than the 400 or the 600, get the 500mm f/4 instead.

I too have had very good results with the 70-200mm f2.8 and the TC17. I am looking forward to using this with a TC2.0 III someday which should be even better. This is such a good lens! When I bought it, it nearly crippled me financially but it was worth every penny really and is my favourite portrait lens. To my surprise, it is also very good for product shots in studio and location as well and I often use it in preference to anything else.

@ DJBee49

Good point about the TC-20EIII with the 300mm f/4 being good. If one searches on the forum you will find a comparison I did with the 70-200mm f/2.8VRII with the TC-20EIII and when stopped down a stop it is excellent even when compared with the 400mm f/2.8VRII. Actually, the first generation of the 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR (Ser No 201XXX) is an excellent performer when I use it and compares favorably with the 400mm f/2.8 and the combination of 70-200 plus TC above. The primary issue with the 80-400mm is the focus speed.

@ msmoto Nikon will sometimes say a combination will not work when it actually does function under some good conditions. They like to error on the conservative side so no one can get into a hassle about promising something which is not true.

I am sure that this is true and makes the dissemination by users of the real day to day possibilities, without 'corporate responsibility' getting in the way, very important.

On a related note, the reason this is all important to me, and I suspect others, is that I can neither afford nor justify the purchase of a 300mm f2.8, or more pertinently, a 600mm f4- however much I would like one....or both! Therefore, the performance of the 300mm f4 and TCs of various strengths is of great interest. This is in fact why I got the D800, not for the 36 megapixels or the video (I don't shoot video and my D700 had ample sensor resolution for me) but for the ability of the sensor to accept good AF performance at maximum apertures of f8. Thus, when I can afford one, I will get the TC 2.0 III and have a usable 600mm lens set up. The D800 and TC2.0 III is a CHEAPER option-by about half- than purchasing a 300mm f2.8 and TC2.0 III. I know it still is not going to be quite as good as the f2.8 option but I am not in a position to choose this anyway. Perhaps I would if I was able to justify it from professional earnings but wildlife photography is a hobby, not my professional photographic sphere. Maybe one day!

@ DJBee49...excellent point about the physical limits and potential for rear element/TC element colliding. Once this happens I suspect it could destroy both lens and TC. Playing with the lenses and focus points is probably the best solution to figuring all this out.

True and the clarity is welcome. I have not been able to find this information anywhere in Nikon's published material, hence the thread! The list of TCs that Nikon says do and do not work with various lenses is simply not accurate with relation to the D700 (and I presume other bodies) and is certainly inaccurate with regard to the D800. I am, of course, not referring here to those lenses whose rear elements physically collide with the TCs. That is a separate matter.

The only slight anomaly is that the camera WILL set to AFC 51 points! This is of no real importance to me but makes me slightly puzzled as to why Auto and 3D are programmed out but the straight-forward 51 points remains possible to set on camera! I also suspect that the set up probably would work in these settings in good light- were it possible to set them- but would not be sufficiently reliable for Nikon to 'allow' them to be set as an 'approved' option. I have no proof of this and will never be able to find out- even if I wanted to! I might, though, do some further experiments to see how well the 51 point setting on its own actually works at f6.7; just out of interest. I don't think that I have ever used this setting with the 300mm + TC17, only using the central cluster settings (up to 21 points) before on both D700 and D800 bodies.

Here is the answer to my query from Nikon for everyone's information.

Thank you for contacting Nikon Support.

TC17 converter darkens the photo by 1.5 EV. This means that if you use it with an f/4 lens, the effective aperture will be between f/5.6 and f/8 (roughly f/6.7).
D800 can focus up to f/8, but only with some of the AF points, not with all 51.
That's why the AF modes which use all 51 points are not available and that's why it works if you use the converter with your f/2.8 lens, which, combined with the converter, gives you effective f/4.7 aperture.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to contact us again.

Best Regards
Martin Maco

scoobysmak said:
Here is what I did on the issue, I had the same debate but the 600mm wasn't really high on the list for me but I did look into it.

1. I really wanted the zoom feature of the 200-400mm, for sports this is great unless its like a night time game, then the extra stop of light might be a bit more usefull but make me move around much more and possibly miss a shot. Since I pretty much figured that if I was shooting day time sports with a zoom I figured the 70-200mm VRII with a 1.7 TC-E could suffice unless I got a lot of request for this type shot. This gives me a 120-340mm F4.8 for my daytime stuff.

2. Now the choice between the 400mm and the 600mm, well the 400mm is a bit more versitale when I picked up my lens since the smallest F stop cameras could autofocus was F5.6. If I used a 2.0 TC-E I could get the same reach as the 600mm with a TC-E 1.4 but would problaby have to sacrifice some quality for my combination. The price was another factor, the 400mm was a tad cheaper and the finishing blow to the 600mm; I can pack my 400mm 2.8 VR lens in a pelican 1510 case that is rated as an FAA carry on item. I will say that some smaller planes you have to use the check bag at the ramp but most larger planes it fits in the overhead bin just fine.

This was my thoughts on the issue but depending on if your getting paid for this or its more of a hobby would make me look more into the issue of what I really need out of my gear.

So you chose the the 400 2.8?

After reading all the posts and talking with a few people about my needs and what I will use this lens the most for its seems as if the 200-400mm is the best one for me. The zoom capabilities and because its lighter and that will hurt me back that much less when i go to a lot of the remote locations that i will be shooting at. As for now I think the 400 2.8 and 600 will have to stay on the wish list.

There's an article on Lens Rentals.com that explains the physics/optics behind what works and what doesn't work really well. It was like the Rosetta Stone that enabled me to understand Nikon's chart.

I fully appreciete the issue...and for me this is about being old and figuring if I am to play... better do it now.
And, it is fun to discuss the difference in one's corporate jet....and that of your competitor....LOL
