I wrote to Nikon for an answer ... the most recent of several back and forth are below ...

Subject
D600 HDMI video out

Discussion Thread
Response (Nikon Asia Tech Support)	15/10/2012 10.54 AM
Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting Nikon Asia Technical Support.

In response to your enquiry, please be informed that it is possible to obtain uncompressed signals via the HDMI interface. In addition, please be informed that we are currently looking into the correction of the mentioned concern.

We shall revert to you if there is any information about this.

With Regards,
Nikon Asia Technical Support

Customer By Email (Rod Morris)	12/10/2012 06.18 AM
> The simple question is - "is there a way to get true uncompressed live view data out of the HDMI interface - WITHOUT the 5% Black border it currently has?"

Thank you

I wanted to add a postscript to my experience. My 24-70 came back last Friday, approximately 7 weeks after dropping it off. The list of what was repaired/replaced was 10 items long. I can now understand why it took so long. I feel like I got a new lens.

Update: now the service department has emailed saying that I should pick it up personally and nothing could be done it seems. Sending a package to a different address is my fault???? Crazy stuff.

I think the reason that repairs are taking a long time is that large sales of new unit is keeping stock of parts locked up. Nikon most likely prioritizes parts like this. 1. NPS repairs, 2. New Units, 3. Everyone else. My AF-S 300mm F4 was out for three months to have the front element repaired and the hood replaced. Hope you're 24-70 isn't out that long.

Unfortunately, it's not an isolated incident. I sent in a 24-70 for warranty work about 7 weeks ago through the dealer where I purchased it. We could get ZERO in terms of status until about 10 days ago, when they updated the status from "in queue" to "waiting for parts from Japan." I think that part of this is due to the fact that Nikon is not allowing smaller dealers to do repairs and are not prepared for the influx of new work. Needless to say, I'm not pleased with Nikon. Not that there's much I can do about it.
However, once I get my lens back and am assured that it's working properly then I intend to provide Nikon with a piece of my mind.

I am sorry this has happened but one must recognize that it is most likely on individual who has messed things up and certainly not Nikon's intention. The unfortunate aspect is that once a screw up is made in some organizations, the ability to get things straightened out is sometimes lacking. And this aspect is a result of management and may be an issue that customer service can help with if it is not resolved quickly. Often, the customer service folks are more interested in resolving things than someone in the repair department as the latter are concerned with public perception.

Good luck.

If they are that chaotic, it sound like with a bit of luck you may just get TWO D7000's back!

Just wanted to share the pathetic condition of Nikon Service Department, USA.

So my Nikon D7k had some sort of oil spots on the sensor and I mailed the camera body for cleaning. Nikon service dept gave me the estimate and I approved it, all is done and they shipped it back (with no prior info that they are shipping it), unfortunately I was out of town and UPS sent it back to Nikon after 3 attempts.

I call Nikon service when I arrive back home and I was told that they will look into it and the next day morning someone from NY office calls me and confirms that they are shipping it back to my home address (no tracking # given). Here is where the problem happened.

They shipped it to my billing address (which is in a different state) instead of shipping address. Fortunately it's my buddy living there and he called me that there is a package delivered and the tracking # he gave was backtracked to have Nikon address.

It's been 4-5 days with no response from Nikon and I'm still waiting with no camera. I have been emailing and calling them with no clear response.

I called Nikon after buddy told me about the package and Nikon repair dept says they have the camera with them. I'm really confused on where my camera is.

I'm told that they are waiting on updates from repair department!! It really sucks to be waiting with no camera.. Very tough.

Never expected this from Nikon!!!!!

I am also experiencing the same issue. I use a Blackmagic mini converter to go from HDMI to HD-SDI and record on to a Flash XDR.

I have emailed Nikon about it. They have asked to see an example. I've sent them a file and so I'm just waiting to hear back now.

They sell it as having a clean HDMI output, but if it has a black box around it, it can't be called a clean output surely!

I'm wondering if any of you own a D600 and an external HDMI recorder. I'm trying to ascertain whether or not the D600 is the culprit in adding a black border to the videos which I'm recording to the Ninja 2 (95% output instead of 100%). If you have the HDS, Ninja, Pix, or any other external HDMI recorder, can you please respond with your own results?

Am I able to post a link on this forum to my blogpost on this issue? Seems a dicey endeavor if I recall correctly...
