Agree with Johnny; if you plan on editing any of your photos now (or in the future), you definitely want to shoot in raw.

Telling someone to not shoot raw is like telling someone to get their film developed into prints at Walgreen's and then to throw out the negatives. I can understand telling a beginner not to shoot raw, but as you progress in photography and your work becomes more meaningful, you're going to come to it at some point so you might as well start early.

Now I know, why people around the world have difficulties with getting mail. E-mail protocol was created to share messages not enormous in size files. Use dropbox or any other file sharing service for this.
Apart from that, Your friend need to download plugin to view raw files on his Windows. Simply google for it. Or as Gabb suggested download PIcasa.

Sary - what software do you use? Photoshop? Lightroom? Elements? Whichever one it is will allow you to export or 'save as' a file that your friend will be able to see (TIFF or JPEG). If it is Photoshop, don't send a PSD as he will not be able to view that one either.

Easy as that.

Emailing RAW files is odd... especially when you don't seem to really understand what they are or how to work with them (not trying to be harsh... just real). So, a couple of things:

1. RAW files are _not_ pictures. They contain all of the information necessary to create a picture... but by themselves they are not pictures. You don't "view" RAW files... you "develop" them into photographs using software. That software interprets the information in a RAW file to create an image.

Sending someone a RAW file doesn't make any sense because it's like giving someone a model airplane kit when you meant to give them the completed plane.

Create the photograph you want and send your friend a jpeg of it.

2. You shouldn't be shooting RAW. Shooting JPEG is almost definitely what you want. Photographs (all developed and everything) will come straight out of your camera and you can send them to your friends. They are going to look great, be a lot smaller and be a lot less work.

3. At the point where you feel artistically limited by what's in a JPEG.... then do a lot of research and possibly switch to RAW. That time might be years from now.

3rd party ones may fit, and sort-of work. My experience is that using TCs on variable zooms, although technically work, image quality suffers greatly. These lenses are not designed to TCs nor are TC designed for use with them. TC are designed for use on pro primes or 2.8 zooms.

Your instruction book does not list any compatibility chart for this lens, so I cannot say. But Tamron makes a TC 1.4 which will be marginal in its use as the f/stop is going to be quite small.

JForhan said:
Here is what I would try:

1. Download/install AppCleaner (cirrent ver. 2.0.6) from FreeMacSoft dot net
2. Download/install Cache Out X (Current version 5.0.5) from trilateralsystems dot com
3. Verify and repair your "Macintosh HD"
4. Use AppCleaner to remove LR and CNX2
5. Run Cache Out X
6. Have you installed any new RAM/HDD and not update PRAM or System Controller?
i. If you have google how to reset PRAM and/or system controller
7. From a terminal look for any directories or files from CNX2 or LR
Check Applications, /Library Application Support & /Users/<your ID>/Library/Application Support - Remove them
8. Re-install LR and CNX2

HTH

Later,
Jeff

Thanks you for sharing

Here is what i think what happened to mine.

At the beginning I transferred the file NOT using nikon transfer, (no issue) hence i wasn't aware that there were any. Later on i transferred other sets using Nikon Transfer 2 (had older version installed at the time) and these files are broken (they are viewable but not editable and not able to be converted to any other type i.e jpeg etc).

CS5 does not support CameraRaw 7 which is needed for the D800, for this you need CS6 , LR4.1 or Elements 10 .

Nope, Photoshop 5.1 (part of CS 5.5) opens D800 NEF's just fine. However, if you're trying to launch Photoshop from Lightroom 4.1 you do get a warning about camera raw differences, but it will still open.

Now I'm not saying that CS6 and CR7 won't do a better job with them, but they do open with the older versions.

Tethered shooting does NOT work with LR 4.1 though (big nasty bummer surprise there).

I don't think CS6 is required to read D800 raw files. As I mentioned, the larger uncompressed raw files opened fine. I transferred the 14-bit files from my camera using Windows Explorer. I've tried DNG too. It does not recognize the file type.

Moreover, I just took more 3 shots in MOVIE mode and 3 in STILL mode and cannot replicate the results I had before. They all open fine now. Very frustrating. Maybe I can download a demo of CS6. I would love to be proven wrong.

The only other cause I can think of is that I had the *OLD* version of Nikon Transfer still on my computer when I transferred the 14-bit raw files (using Windows Explorer). Could that be the poison pill? Cheers
