Ok, sorry, should not have tried to post a link to a supplier, just the brand and type i like to use because its cheap and light ( i guess that's allowed ..) . You should be able to find a dealr for it yourself...

In some situations I also like to use one of those LED panels, so no flash but continuous light. Those things are able to produce 5500k ( daylight) light at the use of two aa batteries, and are super handy because they also provide the light already when focussing and allow to focus with ( partly-) closed focus too. You don't ned a big pro-version for this but 1 or 2 cheapshot $90,- are mostly sufficient ...

R1 combo has 1 advantge though, if you need real close focussing then th sb29-ring kind of "overshoots" because your subject is within the ring of the flash and the flash becomes useless that way whereas the two small flashes of the r1 combo can positioned aside the subject...

Thank you, this helped me a lot because I was also planning to add the Raynox DCR-250 and would be shooting super close.

Hmm perhaps I'll wait until I actually do some macro shooting to see if I want to invest in dedicated macro lighting, then pick up the R1 after I've saved a bit more.

The older SB28 worked well with my D70s :)

I recently sold off my SB-600 to help fund a purchase and now I'm in the market for a new flash.

I also recently picked up the AF-S 105mm Micro so I'll be needing something to give me light and the Nikon R1 kit is a bit out of my price range.

I also considered buying the SB-700 but I'd rather save some cash if I can and the SB-800/900 overkill for my needs.

So anyone use the SB-29s with a DSLR? I know I'll lose TTL but meh, I can learn manual!
