Thank you so much for your help Correlli!! I did what you said uninstall my lightroom and re-installed. Now all my file from my D600 works.

One funny thing is that there are about 30 of my first shot imported my nikon transfer still would not open with the LR4.3

hmm, I wonder what could happen there? I don't really care for those 30 files because they were tester shots around my house.

OK, have you been able to open these exact files in any other program?

When I do click update on LR4 it says it it's up to date and there are no current updates.

@sevencrossing: your links point to the DNG Converter, not CR...

Can you launch an updater from within LR4? That should show all updates for that software including CR. I have PS CS 3 and 6 installed on my Mac and the Updater from Adobe that came with CS3 does not show any CS6 updates. So make sure you launch the right updater.

Btw, I am only guessing that CR7.3 is missing from the symptoms that you showed us. I don't use LR nor Windows.

Ok, when I go to the adobe website it says that I need to download the CR 7.3 through the CS6 but I don't have CS6. I only have CS5. So I opened up my PS CS5 and click update there was not any CR 7.3 file to update.

What I did download from Adobe was the DNG converter 7.3 but it didn't work.

Thanks for the nod to the video--going to go and look for it. The Kelby book on LR3 was very well done.

agree L4 seems more prone to the occasional freeze, then L3 but I suspect this may due to the D800 large files, rather than L4

That said simple closing an opening the program, quickly fixes it

Not sure about the update mechanism of LR, but with Photoshop updating Photoshop and Camera Raw (CR) are two separate things. So you might have updated LR but not CR. Please go to the Adobe website, find, download and install CR 7.3 and try importing the nef files again.

Ok, so I got the LR4 with the 4.3 and LR4 still will not let me upload my NEF files. Here is a screen shot.

Ironheart's point about it being an OS issue are Adobe's claims as well. I'm on OS X 10.8.2 and I have 16 gigs of RAM (which is a ton). I had Apple phone support help me tear down and reinstall the OS. Hasn't demonstrably helped.

I'm in the minority here so I'll stop ranting and raving. What I will close with is this: in developing software, Adobe has rights (for instance, to charge what it sees fit when it sees fit) and two key responsibilities if it wants LR to be a success:
--Design the software for togs with a broad range of creative abilities
--Design the software for togs with a broad range of computer skills
In my case, I clearly fall at the computer skills hurdle. While I'm not entirely comfortable typing on these here newfangled Google-Machines, I do hold a postgraduate degree in Mathematics so I'm not exactly a member of the Great Technologically Unwashed. I guess it's my bad luck that in my number system, 3.6 > 4.3.

If you already had LR4, 4.1, 4.2 & 4.3 would be free.

LOL. To borrow your analogy, you bought a McLaren (D800E) and you think the gas (LR4) is too expensive. :-)

On a serious note, #3&4 sound like an OS problem. What are you running?

This isn't really planned obsolescence. It is hard (read expensive) to maintain multiple major versions of software compatability with an ever growing list of hardware. You have to draw the line somewhere...

Another view is that if I upgraded to a D800 I would have zero problems because I already have LR4.3.

An alternative to LR 4 would be using Adobe's free DNG converter. It does add an extra step to the workflow though, having to create DNGs before importing them into Lightroom. But at least you would get the functionality of using "raw" (DNG) files with newer camera bodies.

As to the upgrade costing “only 60 quid” and that being rather less than the cost of a D800 so that makes it OK, I guess we must agree to disagree on philosophy. LR3 was released on June 8, 2010. LR4 was released March 5, 2012, after which LR3 stopped being updated. I paid $200 for LR3 (on sale), and when I pay that kind of money for software, I don't expect planned obsolescence in less than two years. Can you imagine Nikon saying "We're changing our technology so all our future cameras will not shoot the 50mm f/1.8D. 1.8G only. 1.8G costs much less than the cost of a body, so, no whinging"???

I'm going to keep using LR because I invested time in learning it, but I'm not pleased with the situation.

I'm on the same page as you. When I paid for my LR3 I didn't expect to have to upgrade in order for me to use any new gears that are coming out. I understand that I would be able to use the new features but at least make it compatible.

Correlli is correct and that's just Adobe's money grab--no good. I was exceptionally comfy using LR3 and I can't stand LR4's filing system. Since I shoot D800, I'm stuck with LR4 too.

You will need the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (7.3) to open D600 NEF files in Lightroom or Photoshop. Version 7.2 had preliminary support for the D600 but for full support 7.3 from 12th December 2012 is required.

To get the 7.3 version of Camera Raw you will need to own Lightroom 4 or Photoshop 6. As I don't use LR I have no idea if LR3 would accept Camera Raw 7 at all (even if you got it from somewhere).

So if you want to use D600 raw files in LR there is no way around upgrading to LR4 for you.
