Poster this list wasn't compiled by The Wall Street Journal. They are just reporting the information. The statistics come from a job search portal based on their figures. They calculated income based "by adding the estimated mid-level income and the income growth potential." Here's the rest of their methodology
http://www.careercast.com/jobs/content/jobs-rated-methodology-2010

Cool thanks for the link. Surely different cities/regions change the variables that, make the salary.

I had a summer janitorial job when I was younger. I had to literally clean SH*! off the walls, doors, and celling of a restroom once. My employer was so cheap about supplies that I had to tear sheets of copy paper and had NO GLOVES to clean the mess!!! All of the toilet paper in the stalls were soaked in urine too!

I'll keep my current career (made the first page,ha)thank you very much!

lol this made me really laugh. I need to make a mental note to never take any janitorial positions.

Some of my favorite jobs have been janitorial jobs. I've had three part-time custodial jobs as I've gotten myself through school and I had good experiences with all of them. Something about leaving for the day actually seeing a difference that you've made is so fulfilling and, besides that, off the job it's zero-stress. But the money would never support my rock and roll lifestyle. And by rock and roll I of course mean photographic.

Same here, I preferred working as an electrician than in an office setting. Too much stress. Something about manual labour gives peace of mind.

I am lucky now that I have a pretty stress free job as a photog. Sure the money is next to nothing, but it's better than doing nothing.

Take the list with that old grain of salt. For anyone thinking of a prospective career, remember that the world changes quickly. During my career I've seen many skills change from high demand to low demand. I've seen times when electrical engineers could write their own tickets - other times when they went begging. Same for many specialties.

If you're young and starting out, stay flexible. I've worn a suit and had a corner office, I've also done electrical work and laid bricks. While I like the corner office money, I'd rather lay bricks. I too wanted to be a photographer, but realized I would spend more time selling my services as a photographer than taking picture, and I didn't want to be a salesman.

If you do want to be a photojournalist, remember you will also be running a business. Pick up those skills first for your back-up plan.

as for photojurnalism - that's what I wanted to do some time ago, travel with my camera around the world and take snaps.... unfortunately the reality made me to earn money in a way different way... and now, I think it's not that bad what I do, and at least I can afford to get a new lens or camera from time to time... although, I still want to travel around the globe and take snaps of wild animals- and get paid for it :)

But I can think of a few more disadvantages than not owning your photos, and lots of them are projectile and a few are explosive. I think your pictures would actually be public domain since they'd be taken by a government employee. You'd still get credit for them (usually).

Yup, the danger comes with the job of a war time photojournalist. But you're in the action, that's what photojournalists crave.

If anybody has a bit of time please check out David Tate, he's a freelance photojournalist, who spends his own money to go to ME and cover the war.

Really worth a look.

It's looks like it's going to be a real hard decision for me when the time comes. *Sigh* :^(

You know, we kids have our crazy dreams. To quote what someone said at my school, "When we all grow up and become famous..." I mean, who wouldn't like that? But like Jonny said, he would never leave his family to do something like this. When I "mature" and "come to my senses" then chances are I'll decide not to be a photojournalist, because I don't want to live my life with that stress, I have a family to support, etc. But for now it's like a dream for me. Kind of depressing secretly knowing inside that there's a slim chance I'll actually do that :^(

I thought about enlisting in US Marines as a photojournalist. How awesome would that be? You get to travel the world( well maybe just ME) you are at the frontlines to document what's happening there.

You get paid for it, job is secure for 6 years.

Only disadvantage is that they own your photos. But still I would do it. Unfortunately they asked me to give up my Polish citizenship. I didn't have the option of having dual citizenship. Security clearance and all that. :[
