I would wait for the D900

Seriously. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the D800 that an up to date computer cannot sort

i have a D700 and a 800 and only use the 700 as a spare
to me a "studio camera" is mono rail using 5x4 sheet film

refurb d700 if you can find it. d800 and d600 are great for the tech geeks but in the field you want a real camera...a big heavy piece of metal with a good sized buffer. if you are like me going to the d600 from a d300 will feel like trading in your cadillac for a chevy....very toylike.

Yes check out the new D600 and some great deals out there on the D700. I want my favourite camera back the D700 for the crazy low prices that are out there now. I'd use it as a second body. At a price nearing half of the D600 and a proven winner how could you go wrong? Another thing to consider soriano is with the purchase of a D800 comes a needed upgrade for your computer. I was running a crappy graphics card and just 4GB of ram which was more than enough for the D700 I traded in last April (with $2150) for the D800e, but not nearly enough for the 94mb raw files of the D800e. This can be very costly costly and should be taken into consideration when making a camera body choice in todays market.

soriano said:
..... the D800 is a studio camera .....

IMO, this is a tremendous misconception about the D800 and I would imagine it's caused a few photographers to overlook it. I guess it started with Nikon suggesting it be used with a tripod to get the best IQ but that's not 100% true. Come to think of it, if I had a D3S or D4 and a D800 I'd prefer to leave the bigger cameras at home (I don't have a studio) and use the D800 as my walk-around camera.

A used low shutter count D700, or a D600 if you can live with the control layout.

At this point there is no option. Nikon has decided not to create a real D700 replacement, instead they split the line. It sucks, but that is the way things are.
